I do humbly apologise to those that took offence to my flippant remarks about the euthanasia flight - It's no excuse - but I add this footnote to perhaps? absolve myself -

Re: Volcanic ash cloud on its way

I don't have the time to read back through the thread to find the point where people responded to my situation.

Unfortunately I can't fly anywhere as I have to still complete my university work. I can't be granted extensions without signing a piece of paper apparently. Very helpful. So yeah, I have 6,000 words on trademark law to write by Friday. Best get cracking. Fortunately Shanghai can be a pretty cheap place to live. I'm only paying £5.50 a night and the staff speak English and are honest. The woman at the desk accidentally charged me a night longer than she was meant to yesterday, and although she is meant to be kicking us all out then because the hostel is booked up for Shanghai Expo, she is letting me stay rather than refunding me the money.

I'm stressed out as you can imagine, but this is because I am struggling to access the right sources to complete my work here, not because I'm stuck in China. China is an amazing country to be in.

Also, I no longer have my passport as the Chinese police have it for my visa extension request, so I'm not going anywhere until I have that back!

Blazey, best of luck with your university work. I hope you get it in by Friday

Try to enjoy your extra time, I know it can be hard when you are cash strapped. I am sure everything will work out in the end. I know this is probably no use now, but did you register with the embasy in China, they might be able to help.
In a year or so you will look back and laugh.
Safe travelling

I'm enjoying my extra time here, learning some more of the language casually from the staff here at the hostel. I'm not treating this trip as being cash strapped either because I do have my student loan and the uni are going to help me out financially when I get home. As for laughing, I'm still laughing now. It's a good trip and China is amazing. Just a bit stressed over my work but I'm a hard worker and it will get done one way or another. Just need to persevere and look after my health, both physically and mentally.

And this will be an amazing story to tell when I am older I'm sure. I don't think the embassies can help me that much now, I've sorted out everything that needs to be sorted like my visa and somewhere to stay. Now I just have to get on with it.

Re: Volcanic ash cloud on its way

I'm back now. Got back on Thursday morning. They lost my luggage and it still hasn't been returned to me.

But I am glad to be back, even if I have nothing to show for it but £500 of extra debt.
