Could be worse. A whole bunch of folks in Malawi could be farting into the wind in order to cover up the noxious odours and avoid the law. This polluted air mass could be on its way to Britain.

It now looks as though this eruption is quietening down considerably.
In the first 24 hours it spewed out more ash than the eruption last year did in 40 days.
This is the biggest eruption for more than 50 years.
The Grímsvötn Eruption let Out More Ash in One Day than Eyjafjallajökull

Note that this is not the volcano that they were saying could erupt because of the one last year.

Different types of ash. This ash isn't as fine so it is falling from the skies faster than the ash last year.

Is that in the same vein as the snow which closed railway lines a few years ago, the wrong type of snow

Hate to disagree Jay, but jet aircraft don't have air filters and as they have very big air scoops on the front of the engine they are very susceptible to foreign object damage even heavy ash

Can't you use a pair of Hattie Jacques's old stockings, and rig them up to filter out the ash?

Come on, show a bit of initiative.

To be fair, we had not thought of that one, though we had thought of turning the engines off when we encounter a ash cloud.

Now that's a good idea not only is it eco friendly (which would please the tree huggers) but think of the fuel that would be saved

A little bit off topic but my hippy friends are weird. They actually fly abroad to go to environmental campaigns in other countries. Maybe I'm missing the point of that but it seems to me that the hippies add to the climate change just as much as ordinary travellers. And most of them take drugs that they probably don't know the original source of as well. Hippies are a bunch of hypocrites.
