They use tap water for blessings ??? I thought it had to be some special “holy” stuff passed by someone high up in the clergy

Churches need water for cleaning, blessing, washing up, brewing up and making cordial for children after church services and functions.

Water is also needed for the many flowers that are in church, it is needed for flushing the toilet and washing hands.

More than you'd first think.

Was it a long time ago Margaret? Even very old churches have had these facilities put in years ago.

Immanuel and St Paul's in Ossy have them and they don't come much older than these two buildings so I assume the more modern buildings also have them.

It has been a struggle to remember. I am atheist.
I think it was a wedding at West End Methodist church circa 1993
The reason I remember that one was, I amazed other guests by my ability to sing all the hymns without looking at the book for the words - the indoctrination of a methodist childhood did that

I have just looked at United Utilities website and found a calculator for deciding if a water meter would be cheaper (live alone - no garden)

I did the calculation twice - once showing my present facilities and use - and secondly showing use after a new wc and a shower (due this year).
Both calculations show that I would pay more.

Like was mentioned earlier in the thread, the general rule is that if your house has more bedrooms than occupants a water meter will work out cheaper for you.

My house was built in 2000 so we are on a water meter. Ours is a 3 bedroomed house and there are 4 of us. I think it's expensive at £30 a month for water.

My uncle lived alone in a 4 bedroomed house after his divorce. He requested a meter to be fitted and said it was much cheaper for him.

have spoke to a few people a good while ago that had meters though one never had it put in,as it was there already, ALL said it was much more expensive.so far a few years now i have thought STUFF the Meters.

I noticed the big price increase when I moved here from a terraced house where the charge was much less.
The antiquated system based on rateable value is still used for water rates.
I thought I might well benefit from a meter and entered reasonable frugal use on the website calculator, and was very surprised when it showed I would pay even more.

Just done the test Margaret and it says I'll save £43. 63p a year, mind you I pay £1 a month more than you, can't understand why seeing we live in more or less the same propeties, must have been the same RV

Your flat was built later than mine and likely has a higher rateable value.

The different outcome for the calculations may well be due to my washing up twice a day and a laundry load three times a week.

When I calculated the second time, using shower instead of bath and dual flush wc instead of standard wc, the extra cost of a meter was marginal, but still more than I pay without a meter.

So I don't intend to ask for one - no point in paying more and needing to be careful with my usage.

It is highly unlikely that the use of the ancient method of using the rateable value will be changed, because the government want us all to have meters in the future, so a change to that is the only legislation likely in the future.

All you people in terraced houses - be thankful - and resist compulsory water meters.
