I would hardly say that accyplus. I think that it is not the place of town and city people to try and control countryside traditions which we do not understand. I don't see the people of Accy objecting to the fact that our council regularly culls the local pigeon population or objecting to the fact that we have a rat catcher. Every country has it's own way of controlling pests for example in Dominican Republic the sugar caners had to import Mongoose to kill the snakes which inhabit the sugar cane plantations. The snakes were attacking the caners and ruining crops. Mongoose were released into the sugar cane to kill the snakes. I didn't see an outcry from animal liberation about the import of Mongoose from the USA and the use of such creatures to kill the snakes.
I will pose this question to all who think that the culling of foxes and hares is cruel (by whichever method, be it hunting, coursing, shooting or poisons) If you had an infestation of rats or cockroaches in your home, would you hire someone to get rid of them???? I sure as hell know that I would...

Re: Waterloo Cup!
Think the difference lies in "trying to control pests" and labelling their destruction as "sport".

Re: Waterloo Cup!
You're probably right Lindsay. I would not call fox hunting or hare coursing sports. Then again I don't consider snooker, darts or sailing to be sports either. Maybe they should re-label hunting etc as pest control rather than sport. Whatever they decide to do, I don't think it's right for people who have never lived in the countryside to meddle.

Re: Waterloo Cup!
just wonderign does the waterloo cup an lamping as a whole have any connection with church as worked with quite a fe wlads from church who are all interested in it and often go lamping yet never heard of either till i met them and no one else i know from other towns bothers with it .As much as im against hunting have heard a few amusing tales where there dog has come accross a badger and they ve had to go running to help the dog out and usually end up running off themselves lol

Re: Waterloo Cup!
lamping..?
ahh theres a new method to this
drive over the tops with your headlights on main beam
poor bunny gets dazzled and freeezes on the spot and is more easily squished
hey dont shoot the messanger i dont do it
on a more serious note i do think animal rights activists go too far when they say that fishing should be banned because the hooks hurt them
we are in danger of protecting animals so much that we wont even be able to eat them as killing them will be illigal
dont get me wrong if i saw someone kicking a dog i would thump them but there has to be a limit to how far these animal rights people go as there are cases of them killing doctors because they kill chickens to test medicines
it seems people quickly jump to defend the cute looking creatures like fox's , badgers and rabbits but you dont see people with banners calling for the ban on salting slugs and snails , they have feeligs too you know ...
i once thumped a guy for shooting at a squirrel with his air rifle but i wouldnt have bothered if he had been shooting a creature of lower inteligence like a chav for example
humans are fickle creatures , if an animal can make you go awwww it deserves to live but if an animal makes you go yuk then no one cares if it dies

Re: Waterloo Cup!
On the news it said that the hares at the waterloo cup were bred for the event. I don't have a problem with hunting for food, I've had my fair share of rabbit, duck and pheasant - it's something that my family used to do. Seeing hundreds of Grouse in a pile with a bunch of toffs gloating over them belongs in the past along with fox hunting, hare coursing, dog fighting, bear baiting and their ilk. People might lose their jobs, they will just have to find new jobs like everyone else has probably had to do at some time in their life. I think the whole issue has been blown way out of proportion all said and done, there's worse things going on, and as in the drugs issue, making it illegal might not be the best way of controlling it.
