Re: Weirdness of time
Maybe your wall is just a little warped,which makes the clock go weired, we had a clock with a pendulum in and it would not work on one particular wall...

Re: Weirdness of time
A story for you to really get this back on thread!
Many many years ago my mum bought my dad a clock he always wanted one the old fashioned ones with chiming etc. It was my job when i was a kid to wind it up once a week with the big key - 4 turns no more otherwise it would be over wound. Anyway my dad died and the clock would on the 4 turns only run for 4 days - before he died it ran for a week. Then it just stopped. No matter how many times we wound it, took it to the clock shoppe to have it looked at it wouldnt work. Then about 10 years later it started chiming one day and it started working. It worked for about 6 months then it stopped again. So back to the clock menders it went they said it needed cleaning so they cleaned it and it worked perfectly in the shop. They said they had it running for 3 days before they rang us up to go and pick it up. Brought it home it ran for 2 days then gave up the ghost again. After that it never worked properly unless it was nudged. Then it would run for 2/3 days and then stop again. It went into the clock menders they'd have it running perfect but bring it home and it stopped. When my mum died she left it to my niece and i took it down to her house. It chimed 6 times when i walked into her house and it started to work. It dont work now because she doesnt wind it up.

Re: Weirdness of time
oooh that reminds me of the old song shillelagh
My grandfather's clock
Was too large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half
Than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.
It was bought on the morn
Of the day that he was born,
And was always his treasure and pride;
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
In watching its pendulum
Swing to and fro,
Many hours had he spent while a boy;
And in childhood and manhood
The clock seemed to know,
And to share both his grief and his joy.
For it struck twenty-four
When he entered at the door,
With a blooming and beautiful bride;
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
My grandfather said
That of those he could hire,
Not a servant so faithful he found;
For it wasted no time,
And had but one desire,
At the close of each week to be wound.
And it kept in its place,
Not a frown upon its face,
And its hand never hung by its side.
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
It rang an alarm
In the dead of the night,
An alarm that for years had been dumb;
And we knew that his spirit
Was pluming his flight,
That his hour of departure had come.
Still the clock kept the time,
With a soft and muffled chime,
As we silently stood by his side.
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.

Re: Weirdness of time
I wont have any clock in my house that is run off batteries because they always stop when someone is going to die.
I had a battery clock in my old house and when my nan died it stopped the day before. Not giving it much thought I just replaced the batteries.
The clock stopped the day before my dad died too......... then one day it stopped and I thought " oh well one of those things, no-one poorly in the family" replaced the batteries.
Next day my Grandad died suddenly of a Aniorism sp* - after that I won't have a clock that isn't run off electric now.
The only one I have is my fob watch for work!! and that stopped on friday I hate it and it always makes me feel un-easy.

Re: Weirdness of time
I've got two walls where wall clocks refuse to work - the one at the bottom of the stairs which I mentioned earlier in the thread and which still has a duff clock on it, and over the fireplace in the dining room but there's a picture there now and a clock on the mantlepiece instead. The one that used to be in the dining room was a wind up clock with a pendulum and Westminster chimes. It was lovely. Like Shillelagh's clock it worked perfectly in the shop but just refused to work at home - in the end we just gave up to it and packed it up in a box. Maybe someday somebody will have a wall where it works. It's a 3-key clock in a beautiful carved wooden case - lovely to look at but totally useless for telling the time by.
