I have hanging plants on my front porch .... nobody has ever interfered with them apart from my neighbour, who has real green thumbs, who waters them when I forget. Maybe stealing useless shlt (well, not worth anything to the thief) is a Brit thing that hasn't made it over here yet.

It doesn't even rate as real vandalism: "vandalism" is painting the basket flourescent green (like the socks I used to wear in my early teens), or dumping it on the doorstep. Doesn't seem like there is much point to stealing it

Sadly you see lots of tubs and baskets, at car boot sales. Sold by people with no other plants etc, and who look more light fingered, than green fingered.

Ideal place to get rid of stolen goods.
