Whatever woeful state the exchange rate happens to be in at any one time, it's a brave government that scraps the pound.
With the economy in tatters and likely to remain unhealthy for a few years now, changing the currency of Great Britain would be suicide for us all. The hidden price hikes during the confusion when we went decimal were bad enough, can you imagine how it would be today?

But they still didn't leave the tip that our economy is in today £1 trillion in debt and counting

It would have been far cheaper to give everyone in the country £5,000 if they wanted money injecting into the economy quickly.
I alone would have spent that within a few weeks on some desperately-needed repairs to my house and helped a few small businesses in doing so.
I wouldn't have taken 25% as a bonus, either.

Re: what a clever scam by the royal mint
The Royal Mint have been wrongly accused by accyman, they don't print banknotes. The Bank of England are responsible for printing our paper currency.
From their website:
The Bank of England will always exchange its old notes. Notes may be presented for payment either in person or sent by post (at the sender's risk) to: Dept NEX, Bank of England, Threadneedle Street, London EC2R 8AH.
If you want more info: Bank of England | Banknotes | Withdrawal of the Elgar £20 Note - 30 June 2010

They didn't leave this country in the tip our economy is is now?..those 19 years were the worst economic and social torment Britian has suffered since World War 2...in reality this country was bankrupt by the farce of the ERM.. and I'll say it again when Thatcher joined the ERM it was the closest we have come to joining a single European currency...all this chat about the Tories being better at running the economy or more astute regarding currency is rubbish.. history shows it to be rubbish.

I wouldn't worry too much about Mancie...his knowledge of simple economics is even less than his knowledge of recent British history. For instance, he seems to know nothing whatsoever of the pound's devaluatins under Atlee and Wilson's labour governments - both at the time, far more traumatic than Black Wednesday and he seems to ignore the simple fact that in 1979, Callaghan's socialist government was rejected because the UK economy was in such a mess that people could not even bury their dead. We really were the sick man of Europe.
Still, a website such as this does need people like Mancie. He gives good comic value and I like him for that.

the "winter of discontent" and all that went with it was a disaster and I'd put the blame on the then Labour Government .. I don't pick n choose .. the argument I put up is when some posters on here try to give the impression that under previous Tory governments the economy and the strengh of the pound was all lovely jubbly.. it was not.. and seeing as some have stated this Government are slipping towards joining the Euro, I'll say it again for you thicko's.. the ERM which the Tories joined was the closest this country has ever been to joining a European currency.

the only ******* on here are those that try to make out that the present recession is any different from all those we had under the Tories..swings and roundabouts come to mind... but for the 19yrs the tories were in power most of us were on the slide.

They're constantly looking at newer ways of making it harder for people to forge notes. I don't have one of each to hand but I think there's a holographic badge on the new £20 in addition to the watermark and foil strip from the old one.
They've been around for ages and it surprises me that they haven't done the same with the £10 note. I've not seen a crisp fiver in ages either, time for the coin to be properly introduced methinks.

Perhaps they're hoping that having the author of The Wealth of Nations on them, will make them worth more than twenty quid.
