surely banks shoudl be force to exchange them shoudl you find yourself in possesion of a discontinued £20 note ,i found about eight £1 notes many years after they were discontinued and teh bank took them no problem so whats changed ?

it just seems to me a very good way for the bank of england or whatever to keep hold of a few quid by making some poor sods money worthless and unredeemable unless they actualy send them to teh bank of england its self

there are many ways you can find yourself with discontinued notes after teh date of change passes and not to redeem them with as little fuss as possible is unnaceptable in my opinion

also who teh hell is Edward Elgar the only person i know from any given note by sight is the queen i couldnt say just by looking who teh others are lol

They're probably referring to Sir Edward (William) Elgar 1857-1934. famous for his Enigma Variations, but probably more renown for his Patriotic "Pomp & Circumstances Marches" (think last night of the Proms) all jolly British & stiff upper lip stuff. But probably banned now by some swipe in an office as we'll bloody well upset someones, sensibilities somewhere across the known World.

Rule Brittania, but not round here though ! Probably still safe in the Falklands

This evening, the pound closed at 1.10 euro. It is not implausible that we will see parity within a few weeks. I don't suppose then it will matter what new notes are printed; all Brown and his chums will do will be to peg the rate at 1:1, let the Euro take over and shift blame for all our economic woes on the Common Market.

yet aother case of the govenment sneaking things past us because they know if asked the majority of people will reject it.

im begining to think it would be worth suffering a tory govenment just to get rid of mandleson he is an evil minded crook yet his career just wont die its liek hes teh living dead hell bent on teh destruction of our rights and liberty.Hes even trying to pass laws that insist our internet providers log every keystroke we make on te internet and what content we look at

I Think you are all being a little unfair on this subject,How long do you think it takes to change your old £20 to the new ones.

In my case it took a short time,but then I didn't have thousands stashed away or is it millions.

In any case the deposit boxes are now or shortly will be empty and the lumps in the mattress will have disappeared.

In Spain when they changed to the Euro there was that much dodgy money about no one knew what to do with it but they coped.

Is it four years? Can't be far off. You can call me septic if you like but I know what's what.

Aye, we do forget the past . I seem to recall it was Lawson who began the policy (unbeknown to Thatcher) of shadowing the Mark back in 1988 or thereabouts; formal entry into the ERM did not occur until late 1990 and within a few weeks Thatcher was kicked out by her own people and it was nowt to do with ERM membership. The Black Wednesday debacle was not until 1993, by which time it was Major and Lamont running the show. Despite their incompetance, it was probably the best thing to happen to the British economy.

The billions spent by Lamont is, of course, total chickensh*t compared to the hundreds of billions which have now been peed away by Brown, Darling and the rest of this diabolical crew, not forgetting the 200billion they have just printed off through 'Quantitive Easing'. God alone knows what effect this will have on inflation once its worked it's way through the system. You can shortly say goodbye to the UK's triple 'A' rating, interest rates will be through the roof and if any of you have any sense, you'll emigrate before the UK ends up a third world country.

Entry into the ERM did happened in the leadership of your glory days of Thatcher and her so called anti european cabinet.. all this from a tory government that mashed up the economy of this country within 3 years of a recovery that should have lasted for 30 years from oil revenue.
That day (black wednesday) was the bleakest in any economic downfall of Britian.. and to defend those who brought that downfall is a disgrace.. but then you are a ******.
