Re: What it means to be British..

Didn't the phrase "United Kingdom" originate when James V of Scotland became James I of England?

Re: What it means to be British..

Sorry, James VI, not James V - old age takes its toll.

Nope. It was a century later, when in the 1706 Act of Union (England & Scotland) we had the Union of Great Britain; then the 1800 Union between Great Britain & Ireland led to the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland. This was amended in 1922 following partition, to the UK of GB & NI.

That's more or less what I said Tealeaf but you put it so much more eloquently. If teachers are giving out duff information what hope is there for the future?

Considering how some of the leave school there aint much hope for this country anymore. Most are more "warlike" than some of those African Nations in strife.

Interesting to see that Gordon Brown has been making heartwarming little speeches about Britishness. Could it be he's worried that when he steps into the Dear Leader's shoes, his untenable position as a Scottish MP voting in our Parliament on matters that don't affect his constituents will be shown up to be the democratic sham that it undoubtedly is?

Take the tuition fees bill, for instance. This was voted through with the help of Scottish Labour MPs, yet it has nothing to do with their constituents, because educational affairs in Scotland are decided in the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Hardly democratic, but, then again, when has this government ever worried about a little thing like deomcracy?

Scottish MPs shouldn't have a vote on matters that relate only to English and Welsh law. Infact they should ****** off back north of the border if they truly believe in devolution.

If asked I too am English and proud to be so.

Quite right. I would have thought that it was relatively easy to introduce a measure which debarred Scottish MPs from voting on matters which affect only England and Wales. Perhaps Greg could enlighten us?

Being British is to feel British, i could'nt care less were people are from or what colour they are, if you feel inside you are British then you know the confidence you have and how lucky you are to be a part of these islands. and "COME ON ENGLAND!!!!

Re: What it means to be British..

Whats the falklands then, I always thought they were classed as uk.
You can only be what you are. I'm not sure what some of you class as english, I class myself as british, I was born here but my grandads polish, does that mean i'm english? if not, why do people call themselves english, when a few generations back they wasn't born here? What is english?, never mind what it is to be british, we all know that, it's to be here and want to be here and to be proud and support britain.
And it's st georges day for me, I usually decorate the street with flags. 23rd of the 4th 234. I can never understand why people here celebrate st patricks but can't even remember st georges day.
except the irish of course shaker. That makes sense.

Re: What it means to be British..

Quite bizarely the transport and general workers secretary is claiming that the half a million illegal immigrant workers should stay here and keep the jobs because it would be cruel to send them home, and we need the workers.
