Sorry if this sounds dumb but how can there be a "language barrier"? If these people are working in retail surely they speak English, so why can't they understand?

well i agree with you but this is what bp are trying to put it down too . did the guy behind the counter stop and think to question wether this soldier was allowed to buy alcohol .. nope!!! he just shot him down (pardon the expression) in front of people and huniliated him .

language barrier my backside , it seems to me to be plain racist and he should have been sacked, not sent back on a retraining course that he obviously failed in the first place .

Seems to me that BP may want to re-evaluate their training course before sending anyone at all on it. Their vetting criteria for taking on new employee's could probably do with a tweek too. Hard work to spot a racist though, which is what I suspect this incident was.

Sorry to say JB but not just police on their way home but

Police Officers; Fire Fighters; Ambulance Staff; Nurses; PCV Drivers (and possibly some more)

if the law fully applied are not be allowed onto LICENSED premissess while in UNIFORM after they have finished their shift (but members of the emergency services can enter in the course of their duties).

As far as I'm aware that is the law not sure how it can be applied to the ARMED FORCES as I have not looked into the Act in full.

Same here as well ... of course it is convenient, as most of the gas stations are open 24/7. But no booze. The purchase of booze in Ontario is very tightly controlled ... apart from the bootleggers.

I’m not doubting your word Ber999T but it seems crazy that a uniformed person cannot nip into an off licence on the way home to get a bottle of wine for the evening meal.

That law cannot be applied to the armed forces mainly because new entries in barracks are not allowed to wear civvies when they go outside the barracks for an evening out. Although they could wear civvies on leave. But then that may have changed.

I know that being in uniform, especially a sailor’s uniform, on leave at home was a sure fire way of getting a few free pints and the pick of the girls, unless your home happened to be in or close to Portsmouth, Plymouth or Chatham.

Just re-read the article ... something I skimmed over on my initial read caught my eye ... the bit about no one showing up to welcome the Grenadier Guards home! I can understand that many are opposed to the troops being in Afghanistan and Iraq, but not to show up when the troops come home! Wouldn't it be more appropriate to take it out on the govt.? Grab hold of your MPs and let them know you are p***ed off at govt. foreign policy. But to snub the returning troops is on a par with what the gas station attendant did. When the Van Doos left their Quebec base for Afghanistan thousands of Quebecers turned out to see them off and wish them luck. And this in a Province where support for Canada's presence in Afghanistan is lower than anywhere else in the country ... barely in the double digits ... and falling all the time.

I may be wrong here but im sure gonna check but its my understanding that some barracks will no allow families there for the homecoming, and homecoming greeters are down to the descretion of the unit .
however there could have been many other reasons for this ie the gaurds came home a day or so early /late / etc. .
