It started much earlier than that in the sixties with the loved up hippies. I think it was Frank Zappa who called his son Moon Unit(?) and David Bowie named his son Zowie, who as soon as he got to Gordonstoun wisely asked to be called Joe Bowie instead.

In our case katex, age denies us the opportunity for another child but if that was feasable, we would have included that possibility into the equation when we discussed the use of 2 names as a surname. My "southern" step-daughter kept her original surname when I married her mum but she had and still has a good relationship with her real father. Even now at 28, she talks about her "two" dads. It can't get better than that! but the difference is that she was only a toddler when we married and grew up in that situation.

I once made some shirts for someone called Sir Euan Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe.

He was nothing though to the Euro trash European nobility who sometimes had as many as six surnames, and who used to play havoc with my neat little name indexes.

If I was ever silly enough to get married I would have to have a double barrel last name, simply because, it was my name given as birth right and I'm very proud it. It's a local but quite rare surname, with a nice history attached to it. Ohhh yes and I love it when people find it hard to pronounce

I used to have a neighbour whose surname was Dipton-White. My irreverent husband used to refer to her as Mrs Dipped-in-Sh*te. You have to be so-o-o-o careful.

The most unusual surname that I ever came across is De’ath. We had a Lieutenant De’ath on board a warship in the mid sixties.

His name was pronounced De ath as two separate words.

A search of the London phone directory reveals just 10 De’aths so that makes it very rare indeed.

I'll bet there will be a Dr De'ath somewhere....... Hmmm, a visit to him/her wouldn't exactly inspire you with confidence would it?

For unusual surnames there really should be a new thread but here are just a few of the ones I've come across, over the years, in my job. I promise they are all genuine.

I even had correspondence with a German whose name was Dr F*ck.

Had to edit poor Mr Sh!tehouse as the computer didn't believe it.

When I first came across the name I thought someone had made a mistake and perhaps it should have been Whitehouse but, no, it was correct. I don't know how they pronounced it as I never spoke to them (it was a Mr and Mrs) but I thought she was a brave woman (or a barmy one) to have married him. I'd have made him change his name.

A few years ago a lot of people were randomly invited to a huge all expenses party. No one who went knew why they'd been invited, until they got there and started chatting to other guests - they were all called names like Ramsbottom, Sidebottom and Winterbottom etc. I don't think they ever found out who had invited them all and no one ever admitted to it but everyone had a real laugh about it, apparently.
