also got a funny tale about this guy as well
he asked someone i know for spare change and my friend said that he had none
anyway my m8 walked through the sunday market to the trailors that sell buttys and drinks and got a cup of coffee
no sooner had he recieved his change and turned around he was face to face with spare change guy who promptly asked if my friend had any spare change yet lol

Re: whats happened to spare change guy
Sounds quite enterprising. I've never encountered him. It's usually a "Big Issue" seller I see around there. I thought each "BI" had their own patch but one day I saw a different seller only feet away from the original. The first one stands at the left as you come into Broadway and the other one was standing on the right (by JJB).
We have encounters with quite a scary tramp some Sundays too but that's in Blacklburn. He's probably harmless but just looks very scary with long ginger hair and beard - and I mean LONG. ZZTop eat your heart out.

Re: whats happened to spare change guy
I don't tend to give any money to beggars.
One of them in my town is a known junkie, and I would bet that a large percentage of other beggars are as well.

Re: whats happened to spare change guy
Only one?
I don't mind buying The Big Issue because that's controlled and the sellers are usually polite and respectable. I won't give to agressive beggars and I take your point Vorlon about the strong possibility of the being junkies, either that or alcoholics. The money probably doesn't get spent on food in the majority of cases, although the tramp I mentioned earlier does appreciate a bag of fish and chips.

Re: whats happened to spare change guy
That's fair enough - I would rather give food/drink instead of money.
I would really rather they get a job so that they can pay for it themselves! It makes you wonder how they managed to get themselves in that position in the first place - most of us have to work for our money, and those of us with kids have a full-time job anyway!!!

ive seen him walking around town dressewd up in nice clean clothes and shaven
like most of the beggers in accy he dosnt need the money its just easier to throw any shred of dignity you have away and sit on the floor with a cup asking for spare change
begging can be quite proffitable and is very good buisness in blackpool for instance where the golden mile has one every 20 feet
a few days without a shave and a tin cup i could be a milionair this tiem next year lol

Re: whats happened to spare change guy
Don't laugh - some of them make a lot of money out of it.
I saw a programme a long time ago where a bloke, after finishing for the day, walked a couple of blocks and got into a good quality car and drove home.

yep.......quite correct. Down here, these guys will make 200 quid a day on the prime sites in the West End and City. Thats tax free, every day, apart from the days when they have to sign on.

Re: whats happened to spare change guy
The spare change guy and his girl have probably gone to the Costa del Sol on the proceeds of their begging......it might be sunny there and the pavement maybe a bit warmer. What I want to know is........will this guy and his girl get piles???????
My gran used to stop me from sitting on cold stone she said I would get piles.......and you know what? I have! Piles of washing, piles of ironing, piles of pots, piles of bills!
