What's Happening to Accy?
Hi, I was looking at some photo's last week from an Ossy site, amazing pics.
On some of them they are pulling half of Accy down all the way on Blackburn Road and Lonsdale st. Where they all slummy or what? And where have all the people who lived in them moved too? I can't believe all the changes going on.
I like what they've done at the back of Ormerod St where the Lodge is, going towards Priestly's Clough, by the way, is Priestly Clough still there? I used to walk on the factory bottom to get there, or go by way of Bullough Park. Can you still walk to the five arches? Any comments appreciated.

Yes Priestley Clough is still there. I took some photos last year and will post them if I can find them. There's a carving to commemorate the Five Arches. I took a photo of that too which I think I posted somewhere on here at the time.

It would be great if some of those students' ideas were used. I wonder if anything will ever come of them.

Re: What's Happening to Accy?
All the changes are good. I think renewal can bring fresh life into things.
The Blackburn Road demolition (Phoenix 1) is all down. Funded by John Prescotts Office through ELEVATE East Lancs. New housing will be built though the Council has only allocated 10% for affordable housing as it is opposed to cheap or socially rented housing.
Similarly the streets from there to and including Sacred Heart are Phoenix 2 and will also come down. Also funded by John Prescotts Office thru ELEVATE.
Facing there, the block in front of the Church will also come down for a prominent neighbourhood shopping square where the Church will feature (architectually) more prominently. Ditto funding above.
The large 4 storey steel frame is Health Authority (PCT) who are using a PFI to build 2 state of the art of Health Centres (the other going up currently at Paradise St) to replace 19C century doctors surgeries which exist throughout the area. The health centres are part owned; The PCT has 20%, The Health Authority 20% and Wrights Construction 60% (THE PFI contractor) ownership I believe. The Paradise St one is to house some North West teaching school as well (sch. of dentistry?).
The Scaitcliffe Lodge is Globe Enterprises Ltd. The Council only has a limited say as it only owns 33% in the company, its not the majority partner. Globe was set up by George Slynn some 10 years ago as an venture/investment company for the Council. Its growth has allowed the expansion at Scaitcliffe. The Lodge/Cycleway was cleaned up using £125,000? of government monies and is seperate. Owned by GEL, maintained by the Council.
The flats 54? are luxury flats as kitted out in the kitsch areas of Manchester. Luxury fittings. 1 and 2 bed. Not sure of the price. Development to be completed by Spring 2008. A picture has gone up on the board near Britcliffe Gardens. Demand is expected to be high.

Re: What's Happening to Accy?
Thanks for the replies guys! So lots of good things are happening. About time too. I used to live up Springhill on Arncliffe Ave. I came back last year for a visit and drove around up there. Boy, what a difference. They even pulled down my old elementary school, Springhill and built a new one across the road on Exchange St. near the woods.
