thing is dotti i dont deserve a well done for stopping only reason i did was health problems.it was either that or carry on suffering.

Cashy, of course you do.
It is still a very hard thing to do and requires will power and a strength of character.
Giving up on a habit is very hard. It is easy to stumble and relapse.
So even if your motivation was a health issue....which is the best motivation you can have, you still did it...so well done!

TA Margaret but will have to disagree, i would never have stopped but for the pain, only a village idiot would put up with that, never known owt as bad as it was, not that i was a big drinker when i did that was many years ago.

Cashy, yes the pain must have been bad...I have known people who have carried on in spite of the pain.
When I worked on the surgical unit I saw a chap bleed to death as a result of being unable to give up the alcohol.
I looked after him when I was a first year student, a second year student and he came Ito the unit while I was on surgical nights.....I cannot tell you how much effort went into trying to save his life.
We did not manage it.
So giving up anything has to be a positive choice....and it takes constant maintenance.

Common sense is a curse....if you have it then it makes life difficult in negotiating those who do not.
It should be re-named ‘application of knowledge’....it certainly is not common.
