You are right about that - I drink black coffee - I have done since I was 13. I was in a meeting once and realised that the majority of the people there had a different ethnic background to me so I wondered (being as PC as possible) whether asking for black coffee could offend. So later on I asked one chap who I consider to be a friend whether he was offended by it - he nearly fell off his chair laughing! Black is the colour of the coffee - simple as that, he said, in between hysterics that I would even consider for a minute that it might be offensive.
It's very difficult in this day and age knowing what is offensive to Asian people and what white people and the media SAY is offensive to Asian people. As you can tell from some other threads I am still picking my way through the minefield and probably won't get it right every time but I do know that 'black' does not offend anyone when used in the context of what you're talking about i.e. black coffee, black board, Blackburn!
