who remembers rhyddings park
what has happened to the local parks?my 4 year old son loves going but where do you go,now theres nothing at them maybe a small slide and a couple of swings.i remember going to rhyddings park as a kid there was hundreds of people there enjoying a day out, there was tennis, putting, bowling, paddling pool and a great play area in the park we was never bored there, and people came from miles away just to see the peacocks in full bloom.i know they must cost a fortune to keep tidy and keep open but it would be nice to be able to go to at least one where you know your children will have a great day out !!!

Re: who remembers rhyddings park
Oh aye remember many a summer and dinner hour from school up there.Lovely place and we have even taken the girls there when back.People seem to have lost their way in certain ways. There are so many good things in Accy but alot prefer to look elsewhere.Gatty Park was also a good one.Took the girls there in August as we were visiting friends right next door

Re: who remembers rhyddings park
I have very fond memories of Rhyddings park during the 60s as a young boy. We lived on Yew Tree Drive in those days so the park was a handy place to play. I recall access via a side gennel, & turning left passed a gardener's hut(?). The whole park felt like a maze, with paths, trees and bushes, beautifully maintained flowers & shrubs. There was a bowling green and a long drop down towards Park Lane. Best of all was the playground with its slide, r/about, sand pit and swings. I remember being doubled up on a swing with a pal when I smaller boy walked in front of us on the down swing . Suffice to say, we hit him poor kid. We were that frightened to see blood, we ran off. :-[
Anyone recall the archway that looked like a castle turret on one of the entrances to the playground?
Unfortunately, we moved in 1972 to the wrong side of the pennines. Haven't seen the park since - but I bet if it's like most these days, it will be a shadow of its former self.

Re: who remembers rhyddings park
The archway is still there we used to climb it as kids, theres no top on it though now dont know if there was then in your day ,i remember it as a maze too had many an hour playing hide and seek, there is still a small animal part there with a few rabbits, ducks and a few trapped pigdeon and sparrows thrown in too,but no peacocks .the park part has a very small slide and 4 swings oh yea and these animal things that rock back and forth, and a floor full of broken alco pop bottles, well safe for my 4 year old !!!!there,s a big field at the bottom of the park does anyone know what it might have been used for or anything built on it?

Re: who remembers rhyddings park
The park used to be a paradise for kids. Tennis, paddling pool, putting, they even used to have a bat and ball thing a bit like table tennis that you could hire but you put your hands in it like a glove (not many people remember that). The shop always had lollies and the toilets were clean. The top bowling green was for novices but woe betide you if you ventured onto the bottom bowling green - you had to be a serious player to go on there. Great fun!

Re: who remembers rhyddings park
before i could afford a car(early 70s)we lived down church, every sunday afternoon weather permitting, asked the kids where do you want to go?mostly they said rhyddings park dad,was a fair old trail, but worth it to see the enjoyment of them(feed the animals)swings, hide @seek its such a shame our parks now(tired)thats being kind.

Re: who remembers rhyddings park
the problem is that todays teenagers would kill the animals and destroy tennis courts
as for swings and stuff the council get so many claims because children fell of them that it is much easier to have nothing at all
