Re: who's actually skilled at something?
I am quite good at passing exams - the ones I have allow me to give financial advice in mortgages and investments (all regulated activities), and one of them says that I am pretty good at tax (the main 3 types) and trusts.
I wouldn't claim to be an expert though, as I have only been doing the job for about 15 months in the role of adviser - I was on the admin side for a few years before that, and it took awhile for me to decide that I really could do a much better job than the cowboys I was working for!
My present colleagues would apparently give their eye teeth for my 'wealth of technical knowledge' as they put it, and they also think I am an expert in anything technical with regards computers, so I tend to be the first person they call if they have a problem.
One day one of them will work out that I'm not really great at the inner workings of a computer or that a lot of my knowledge is becoming a little out of date, but I guess experience counts for a lot too.
