I'm a Pharmacy Technician, so I'm skilled when it comes to dispensing/preparing drugs we do everything from general dispensing, making premature baby feeds, making ointments, to chemotherapy, I like to think I'm good at my job but no expert.

Re: who's actually skilled at something?

I have loads of certificates from Life Saving to First aid and from GCE's to a degree in Fire Engineering, and I have worked with people that have many more than I have. The problem I find is that their is no certificate issued for good old common sense, some, correction, most of the academics that I have worked with could paper the millenium dome with their certificates, but are clueless when a decision involving common sense has to be made cause they hav'nt read a book about it. In many a profession although the interviewers are looking for qualifications, the top people who are indispencible are usually their because they are good at the job not at passing exams.

Re: who's actually skilled at something?

I am quite good at passing exams - the ones I have allow me to give financial advice in mortgages and investments (all regulated activities), and one of them says that I am pretty good at tax (the main 3 types) and trusts.

I wouldn't claim to be an expert though, as I have only been doing the job for about 15 months in the role of adviser - I was on the admin side for a few years before that, and it took awhile for me to decide that I really could do a much better job than the cowboys I was working for!

My present colleagues would apparently give their eye teeth for my 'wealth of technical knowledge' as they put it, and they also think I am an expert in anything technical with regards computers, so I tend to be the first person they call if they have a problem.

One day one of them will work out that I'm not really great at the inner workings of a computer or that a lot of my knowledge is becoming a little out of date, but I guess experience counts for a lot too.

Re: who's actually skilled at something?

I've remembered somethng else I can do (it came to me at the Mela yesterday) but haven't done for ages. FACE PAINTING.

When my girls were younger it often felt like I had the whole of Accrington here queueing up to be tigers or witches. I haven't done any for ages now so I'd be a bit out of practice but I've still got some equipment and have done the odd birthday party now and again.
