X windows has been dpoing the multiple desktops for years and there is an add on that does a 'sexy' visual swap.

BTW there is a utility called X-Desk for windows that does the same, I use it at work ti organise my desktop(Usually have ~15 SSH sessions open on one, email & office on another, Web browsers on another etc)

Had a look at the X-desk, not as good as the Kororaa project xgl one, worth downloading for a look, its not installable though its only a demo.
Its hard to describe but its like having a cube in your monitor that you can spin round, you can even have a page going round a corner at 90 degrees
