Having read Gayle's Warning (no pun honest mine would be worse than that!),
[quote]my book is still inside me!
It got me thinking about some of the awful books that I have read that were written by women, however I have to confess that because I am averse to reading a lot of womens writing, (on the principle of, “once bitten twice shy!”) , I must have read thousands more, very bad books written by men!
One of the best written, easily read and extremely difficult books to put down I have ever read was written by a women. I came across this book in the early seventies.
She wrote it in a very simplistic form, (before any of you say it of course it was simplistic Less you understood it!), hoping that the reader would learn to share the joys and indeed the suffering that she had gone through that lead ultimately to the writing of that very book.
The Authoress, had come from a very well to do family In India and had been brought up to do as she was told, she had, had her life planned out for her from the very beginning of her existence.
When she announced to her family that she had one true love and was going to do whatever she could to pursue her passion the family resorted to locking her in her room and even threatening her with violence.
She waited for the right moment however and escaped to one of India's larger Cities.
There she went to University and learned about Mathematics she spent her whole life dedicated to and discovering all she could about the subject and eventually, put pen to paper and wrote her history on the subject.
From the earliest times through to the discovery of the zero, and on past that up until more recent times. She showed us not just the theories of maths but also some of the everyday uses that we all put maths to without even thinking about it.
I read, and re-read that book so many times the binding was falling apart. Then after one house removal too many I found that I had lost the book. I will recognize it instantly if I ever see it again, and will once more add it to my sad little collection.
The frustration of my search is that I am completely Useless at remembering names so both the name of that wonderful Lady and her contribution to the joys of my life are at the moment lost to me.
Hmm, I wonder what google will throw up if I put in 'That little maths book wot that Indian lady with the Phd wrote?'
One thing she didn't teach me but I learnt afterwards was if you're doing complicated maths make sure your calculator has fresh batteries!
