would you???
A bank handed over a 19 year old, £135.000 in ERROR into her bank account, By the time they had realised the mistake, the money had all gone!!....
Now she faces a custodial sentence, the question is would you spend it if you found that much in your account??
I would be very tempted after all it is the banks mistake ......but then again its not your money to spend ...emmmmm

Spend, Spend & more Spend.
Would probably withdraw it, clear all my debts, put the rest n another bank account, give it 6 months if nothing came of it its mine.

Re: would you???
a few years ago i was in manchester, me n reece had just got off the metro on market street and where heading for primark, we went by a cash machine and there was some money just coming out of it, obviously the person who had wanted the cash had forgot it, it turned out to be £350 i told reece to get it and we took it straight back into the bank, i gave it to a cashier in the bank and told them what had happened, and all i got was 'oh' no thankyou or anything, i still dont know if the person it belonged to ever got it back, but at least my concience was clear

Good point. I would have given it in too, as you don't know how desperate the person was who'd lost the money. It could have been someone who was down to their last bit of savings and needed it to pay off debts/bills, etc.
I think alot depends on how much money there is when you find it. Small amounts like £10 or £20 I would probably keep, but large amounts I'd hand in.
In cases like the one in Panther's case above, then common sense says you won't get away with it. The bank were always going to miss £135,000 and trace it back. It's obvious it's not yours and is therefore theft if you spend it.

I probably would have questioned it with the bank before spending any of it but I don't think it's right that this lass should get sent to jail for it, after all she didn't set out to deliberately defraud money from the bank - it was the banks mistake and as such they should have written it off

Re: would you???
I know it was the banks mistake, but surely she must have realised that the bank would eventually find out, & that she'd have to give it back.

Re: would you???
with £135.000 she could have moved and changed her I.D

Re: would you???
Would it really be worth looking over your shoulder all the time, just for £135K?

Re: would you???
I don't think she should have been sent to prison but she sho9uld have had enough sense to realise that someone would eventually notice the mistake and she'd have to account for the money. If I'd noticed a sudden huge deposit like that I would have contacted the bank.
Same with the cash dispenser money. I would have handed that in too.
