Its a sad sign of the times really that kids now sit a computer playing games instead of joining and getting some exercise, its bad enough when that's the only thing open to you, let alone when your so young, how very sad for the lads family

Sad indeed - I thought DVT was something linked to long distance flights and was more likely to hit older people. You learn something new everyday ...

I know he was young, but he was hardly a child. Surely he must've had to get up for a call of nature and something to eat.
Anytime you are sat in one place for a long time, puts you at risk......if you have a job which means you are sat at a desk for long periods, then you should be flexing your feet and ankles, but better still, you should get up and walk around.
People who work in call centres are at particular risk...they are tied to a head set/desk and have to ask for a comfort break.

You are not allowed by law to stay more than 2.5 hours at a desk in a call centre in the UK and haven't since 1997 as my first job in Barclays was in the call centre that was opened in Salford keys in April 97 organising shifts/doing MI/dealing with holidays etc . I had to try and match the call volume forecasts against the staff levels within set rules and one was absolutely that no longer than 2.5 hours without a break. the "advisors" were also allowed 5% of their time "Not Ready" where they could get up an get a drink of water/stretch their legs etc. Also teh headsets and desks were designed such that people could stand up and generally move about as much as they needed.

OK, so Barclays may be a "good" employer but the law certainly existed back then....

Hmmm...that is really interesting. It might be law but I am pretty sure this information isn't passed to the workers....I know a place where this doesn't seem to happen.
I will pass the information on to the person concerned, and see what the team leaders know about this regulation.
