Alec will be going to the local college, so I presume he will live at home.
Normally you move 'off' to college or university after the age of eighteen, though you can still study at local colleges or universities, then you wouldn't have to go 'off' at all. I myself, happily went 'off' in 1983.
I suspect it's as clear as mud now, or a pint of milk that's gone 'off'.
