Turns out there is quite a bit of history to that Grand Union flag. In the early stages of the American Revolution, it symbolized both the thriteen colonies and the wish to reach a compromise with the mother country. There were a number of flags in use at this time, but it was probably flying in Philadelphia as the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. Also, very similar to one used from 1707 by the East India Company!

Thanks, mez! It's still a US flag, but with a little bit of the UK. Given how popular Mr. Bush's foreign policy is these days
 , might afford a bit of protective coloration as well!The weather here is as hot or hotter than it was in Ossy during my visit - but the humidity about 100% here, so everyone is trying to keep cool. Makes me wonder (apart from the fact that it is a safe subject for discussion) why folks in the UK feel a need to apologize for their weather.
