The North West Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University is pleased to announce ‘Blackburn on Film’, part of its programme to make this fascinating collection available to the public of the North West region. Supported by Vision+Media, the NWFA will present a public screening of films from its collection at the Thwaites Empire Theatre Blackburn

The screening will take place on Thursday 19th August 2010 at 7.30pm.

The films to be shown will feature life in and around the Hyndburn and Blackburn area over the past 110 years, exploring the lives, industries and celebrations of the area throughout the 20th century. The screening will feature the earliest known football film as ‘Rovers’ take on West Brom in 1898 and a Mitchell and Kenyon faked topical of scenes form the Boer War. Join the marchers and Rose Queens in Accrington’s parade of 1908 and see the town’s Pals head off to war in 1915. Drop in to Witton Park with Baden Powell and the scouts for a rally in 1924 and get behind Darwen as they take on Arsenal in 1932. Marvel at the many vivid printed colours as the staff at Broadoak mill ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ producing cotton goods throughout wartime in ‘Queen Cotton’. And join Giles Brandreth for fish and chips in Darwen as he tries to get to grips with what it means to be ‘northern’ in 1971


The Archive’s Service Manager Marion Hewitt said “This is a great opportunity for the people of the Blackburn area to enjoy an evening with a difference, and take a look back at local life in the past century”.

I would have thought that given the Accy content of some of the films a more apt title would be 'Blackburn with Darwen and Accrington on film'.

Or even better - 'Accrington and Blackburn with Darwen on film'.
