Re: East Lancs Railway

I went to see it twice during the first week, once with a pacific (Oliver Cromwell).

I noticed from behind the platform (I didn't have the money for a platform ticket?) the new engine didn't smell, whoever says you can't beat the smell of a steam engine would miss this feat of engineering.

SUPER!!!

Nout like sitting on the wall, near what was called 20 Steps, train spotting when I was a kid, remember seeing the Mallard which help the speed record for a steam engine, come through Church Station and past the 20 steps

Re: East Lancs Railway

I did have a platform ticket and took a few photos of Tornado, I even got some without the backs of ignorant people walking in front of the camera.

The driver told me that the owners of Tornado had asked anybody hiring the loco for their lines not to clean it, maybe it will get that wonderful smell eventually.

Just for you jaysay, below is Mallard, so you can relive your childhood memories.

A cheap day return to York with a pensioners pass and a look round a free museum is not a bad day out.

Re: East Lancs Railway

Here is another fine loco which is/was lodging at York Museum. I used to watch them thunder through Hest bank when I stayed with my aunty in North Morecambe.

Even though it is one of ours, LMS, I don't think it is as good looking as one of theirs, LNER Mallard.

I recon the Lizzies and Duchesses looked better with out the cladding.
I have photos of one running at East Lancs somewhere on my hard drive among thousands of other "snaps"

Re: East Lancs Railway

Steamtown

Not far from Carnforth railway station is what used to be the 'Carnforth Motive Power Depot' where many steam engines were based in steam's heyday. However, on 13 August, 1968, the very last job undertaken by a steam engine on British railways was completed at Carnforth. The fires in engine 44871 were allowed to drop that evening. And so ended the steam era in Britain.

During the last weeks of steam, Carnforth became very popular with enthusiasts, and sometime in 1969, Steamtown was born out of the ashes, so to speak, of the old Motive Power Depot. Over the years, Steamtown preserved and restored many engines, and for quite some time was the home of such famous locomotives as The Flying Scotsman, Mallard and Sir Nigel Gresley, not to mention many others familiar to rail enthusiasts. Incidentally, the train featured in the Harry Potter films, called the Hogwarts Express on screen is stored in the sheds at Steamtown.

Regrettably, due to the increase in commercial work at Steamtown, the decision was taken to close the site to the general public for safety reasons in 1997. Work still goes on at Steamtown. Of slight note for enthusiasts, the concrete coaling plant there was built during the Second World War, apparently by Italian prisoners of war. This coaling plant is still functional, an in fact still uses the original electric motors!
