Re: Hyndburn Mela
It is a Mela and Community Festival. Can't comment on what happens at other Melas. As far as I know most gays and lesbians are members of the community.

I wouldn't stand too close to me Doug, you might just end up being accused of being a liberal, money wasting, art loving lesbian as well! lol

I'm sure you can't but based on the tone of some of Tealeafs other arguments I wouldn't be surprised if he tried.

Hmmmmm. OK. So we can antiipate seeing a gay & lesbian stall then?
However, you have still not answered my very original question.
The Accy carnival has a history going back to the 1920's, and in turn this is based upon the old, street walking festivals. Over the years, it has been done by several local organistions with contribution of many small buisnesses. It has raised an awful lot of money for charity, yet has received minimal public funding. Yet the mele gets large public funding.
Why?

The Carnival charges £2 entry whereas the Mela is free. And yes, the Mela gets public funding but local businesses contributing to an event is also a form of funding isn't it? Except that the Mela isn't marred by any sort of commercialism/advertising, etc, nor is it marred by people jangling buckets in your face every five minutes to get extra cash. It's just a different way of organising an event.

Then why can't local buisnesses contribute towards the Mela?

But did I just not read your posting saying that there were stalls selling various items at the mele? Is this not commercialism?
nor is it marred by people jangling buckets in your face every five minutes to get extra cash.
So what? Is it mandatory to contribute into the bucket? No, it is not.
It's just a different way of organising an event.

Exactly. I have no problem with a Mela, but I do have a problem with it's funding. If someone wants one, then let them pay the commercial cost. We do not go for an afternoons entertainment at a reasonable football game or to the cinema, or to a rock concert, and expect not to pay. The same principle should apply here. This wanton discrimination should be ended now.
Thank you, Gayle...that is all I have to say for tonight

Re: Hyndburn Mela
Oh well I like the idea of a free festival of any kind. I shall be sorry that we're away when this is on. Maybe we'll delay going for a couple of days if poss so we can be there and enjoy it.
I like the Morcambe Light & Water festival too and would be sorry to see then end of that if it doesn't get funding. That's free too and a great weekend's entertainment with bands and stalls. (and fireworks)
I loved the Lancaster Georgian Fair too and was sorry that was axed last year because there was no funding.
Do we have to miss out on things which can be an enjoyable day out for so many people? Lets be thankful we have the support for this and just enjoy what we've got whilst it's there. Heaven knows there's little enough in Accy to get excited about.

Re: Hyndburn Mela
Thanks Willow, I was beginning to feel a bit under fire there. I'm glad it's appreciated by some people.
Hope you can make it on August 7th.

Re: Hyndburn Mela
people complain - nag nag nag nag - we dont know what those ***** are doin we dont know this we dont know that. that custom is just stupid that sport is just lame. blah blah blah blah blah...
so when there is a chance to integrate people start complaining. remember there was a time when such festivals for anglo-saxons were free adn aided along by the public fund. but people turned them into £150 tickets and called it glastonbury. what about the various shows that go on aroudn the country? the free music festivals? i dont see no asian acts on there. maybe nitin sawheney but he hardly is a traditional asian dj. i know rock fm does the free party in the parks and i'm sure they dont pay for all the policing and clean up. same with the radio one shows. whilst they were there - fat boy slims beach thing. that was free.
yes u will get funding for what u want provided a wide variety of people will want to come and experience it. a sorry excuse for a **** up is not worth 17k in anyone's pint. i like a cold carlsberg as much as anyone but 17k?
instead of knocking i dare u to go and see what the 17K is spent on.
from kipax's pics...

wow soo many asians there. i cant even spot a single non-asian.

Re: Hyndburn Mela
typical hyndburn council promoting foriegn ****e as usual.... what about a concert done by
british blooded musicians who play british music? why not promote french music instead
and turn this mela into a melee! .... hyndburn council have prooved their incompetance again
even britcliffe admitted he doesnt know what he is doing ( his excuse for selling off this town to foreigners ) if the retard had said that 20 yrs ago maybe they wouldnt have squandered at least 60mil ... this town has been killed by your own council , at least the great northern town of
durham told the council to swivel when they opted to privatise the council houses...you should monitor their progress...at least they were more sensible than hyndburn who think things will get better cus they (very stupidly) voted for the privatisation by being conned by the council cowboys who even put a little vid together to entertain the monkeys....aaaaaahhhhhh
(one hundred and fifty grand wasted on a ten minute video)
how very conservative of hyndburn homes to think about their precious little jobs which they should all lose in the eyes of justice...but in todays sick and depraved society is rewarded.. by
biological entities who never advanced past the stage of zygot...and never will...
you have all been conned for so long , why have all the major employers left to go abroad in order to maximise profits? lancashire used to be great... the cotton mills... prestige..platts..
r.o.f. phillips ... etc etc ... even our rolls royce is foreign!!! as a patriot to my country it is my duty to inform you all that there are acts of treachery going on in the council offices (which is still punishable by the death penalty)..but dont bother telling the filth, cus satan stevenson and his band of bent bobbys are in it too...so anyone fancy making a citizens arrest?
p.s. talking about bent bobbies there will be a newer upbeat version of "worlds best at sarcasm"
ft clitheroe constabulary ...(mixed by jc) ... plus something from the album we are working on at the moment called "THE HARLEQUINS OF HYNDBURN" ... i will let you know for sure before i go
away for a few weeks ....in fact our collective of musicians have come up with enough material
for a trilogy! but it takes a long time here at bassland cus our equipment is old and useless and
have tried everywhere to get funding...from the hyndburn enterprise trust to the national lottery but so far we have received nothing...too busy trying to save the world when everything AROUND YOU is dying ... i will post a notice sometime next week when the tunes are ready

Re: Hyndburn Mela
The thing is that the Mela is just one event that I'm involved in and it has a specific target market - young people, asian people and families from all cultures. For example, I'm working on the VE/VJ event which is targeted more at a different older audience.
One event can't be everything to everyone and people who complain about particular events probably won't complain about events that are targeted for them.
The only way to improve the Culture and Leisure in this area is to try to provide something for everyone but that doesn't mean the same thing for everyone. So, if you don't fancy coming to the Mela that's fine, but don't knock it simply because it's not to your taste. All, I can say is that there are people in this borough doing our best to provide a varied programme of events and activities, and we're doing our best but it's like wading through treacle sometimes.
We have very few resources and rely on funding to make some of these things happen. But if there is anything specific that you'd really like me to try and organise, then let me know and I'll see what I can do - let's be constructive here please.

Well I'm hoping for a fine day and we'll be there from mid-afternoon when we get back from church because we aren't going up to the caravan until Tuesday now due to Busman's work commitments and my inability to erect the awning by myself not to mention windmills and generators and mowing the lawn.
The music isn't necessarily all to my liking but if previous years are anything to go by it should be a good day out and a lot of fun, plus I like having my hand mendhi'd so I hope there'll be the opportunity. The last time I had it done was at the Springhill School Gala day and that's worn off now.
There may be many things I don't like which other people do but I wouldn't suggest they shouldn't have them.
