Portable Pixel Playground in Acc Town Centre on 8th May

Liberating Empty Terrain (LET)
Turning empty spaces into creative places across Pennine Lancashire

Accrington Town centre will be one of the spaces across Pennine Lancashire which will be transformed this summer through an exciting new project called LET (Liberating Empty Terrain).

LET aims to use town centre spaces to showcase the work of creative industries from across the Pennine Lancashire region. The spaces will be a mix of outdoor spaces and empty shops. The project aims to bring artists’ work direct to the public to enjoy, in places they may not usually expect to see such activity.

Hyndburn Borough Council is launching the Accrington part of the project with an event on the 8th May from 11am to 4pm in the grounds of St James’s Church, Accrington. The Portable Pixel Playground will be visiting Accrington and asking young people to find a new way to ‘play’. The Portable Pixel Playground was created by Folly in Lancaster and is bit like an adventure playground, a bit like a work of art, and a bit like a computer game, the playground has been designed to allow young people (and inquisitive adults!) to use everyday technologies in fun and creative ways, providing them with new, interactive and hands-on experiences of art and technology.

Over the coming months, Accrington will be the inspiration for a number of activities including a new ‘mapping exercise’, temporary art installations and exciting new creative drama pieces which will be created at the soon to be reopened Civic Arts Centre. Community groups and local youth groups are invited to get involved. For more information visit the Civic Arts Centre’s website www.civicartscentre.co.uk. All briefs will be posted on there and information for groups who want to get involved will be available.

Liberating Empty Terrain (LET) is a new project by Creativity Works which aims to raise awareness of the high quality creative industries that exist in Pennine Lancashire. Creativity Works is an initiative co-ordinated by the Arts Officers of Pennine Lancashire, Creative Lancashire, Curious Minds and Arts Council England NorthWest.
