Review. Il Pianista
Went to Il Pianista on Church St on Wednesday night. This is the place which used to be Papa Luigis. The general layout is very similar to Papas with new tables and chairs. The menu is somewhat smaller than the old place with less choice but more than adequate to cover most tastes and reasonably priced.
I had the Garlic Mushroom starter and as a non dieter I had some cream in the garlic sauce. I have to say that it was one of the best Garlic Mushroom starters I have ever had. If I hadn’t been in a restaurant I would have licked the dish clean. Fortunately, I managed to tease most of the sauce out of the dish with a spoon.
Sparks had the Smoked Salmon starter which consisted of 2 generous pieces of smoked salmon with prawns in marie rose sauce which was rolled up in the salmon (cigar style) and a salad, once again, the plate was licked clean.
We both had Fillet Steak with bacon and gorgonzola for the main course, with veggies and a side order of baby potatoes. The steaks (medium rare) were done to perfection and the baby spuds in garlic and herbs were delicious. Once again, the plates were cleaned.
After all the plate cleaning we unfortunately had no room for desserts, (but I reckon that I could have found room for a Tiramisu at a push ).
All in all, it was a lovely meal at a very reasonable price, the staff were friendly and even had a tinkle on the piano which has pride of place in the restaurant. The menu may not be as big as the old Papa Luigis, but the dishes on the menu are done very well. There is plenty of choice for starters, pasta, pizza and meat dishes.
Il Pianista do cater for party nights and there is a ladies night coming up in February with some male entertainment (if you know what I mean ). They also have special offers from Sunday-Thursday where you get a choice of selected starters and mains for £8.95. For details of the ladies night, either call in or ring 239010.
