Angry charity raffles !! tombolas

last weekend at a local charity do,with all the usual stalls i was amazed to find an outraged parent going hammer & tounge at a raffle/tombola stall after selling a raffle ticket to there child ,that it self not a crime you say!!
but the child by this i mean teenage child who had won a bottle of whiskey, and they had handed it over to her , she then gathered up her mates went to there local park and got ratted ,surely the stall holder should not have sold this ticket to a child knowing full well that there may be a possability of them winning alcohol , and even more stupid handing it over when the law states an under 21 cant purchase this sort of sprit from any other sorce (if this would have been my child i would have informed the police)there must be a law against this sort of thing ,but the stall holder just kept on insising it was all in a good cause ,and hadnt done nothing wrong..........

As someone who has been in charge of many a tombola through voluntary work we got round that one. What we used to do was have a separate tombola with the drinks on and refuse to sell any tickets to under 18's. That way it was covered. Even though there might have been bottles of vimto and orange on the tombola we still refused to sell them to under 18's.

It is not great to see people giving up there spare time for good causes when it involves giving children bottles of whiskey. These people should find another good cause. like a common sense transplant. harsh? I don't think so.

Its hard getting volunteers to man the stalls and to organise it and run it. Sometimes the volunteers manning the stall can be busy so they take their money and dont have time to ask if the adult standing next to them is a parent or guardian. I have spent many a time asking kids where their parent is or trying to find them as theyve lost them. How many times have you been to a fundraiser and seen the kids going round on their own? Parents give the kids a fiver and say off you go then and go and find their friends or wander round the stalls themselves letting the kids go and do their own thing.

There you go again Poppy, taking half a quote out of context and misrepresenting the original poster. Do you do it on purpose or can you really not help yourself?

Yes watsupp I totally agree with you that the stall holder should not have given the whiskey to someone under 18. They could perhaps have asked if they had a parent with them and/or suggested that they would hold onto the prize until it could be collected by an adult. We've got round things like that by having non-numbered prizes and the first drawn gets to pick first , the second next and so on with the proviso that alcohol and tobacco prizes can only be chosen by adults.

Re: charity raffles !! tombolas

yet again another great idea on how to get a fun result for a fun day.... it just goes to show that a little more thought should have gone into the preperation.....
yes poppy a little bit of common sence should have previeled and the bottle should not have been given out to her in the first place......

Re: charity raffles !! tombolas

A slight change of topic! I walked down to my local pub for a couple one evening, thinking that my 13 year old daughter was safe in the care of her mate's parents only to find her legless in the bar. I mean really legless!

It turned out that they had 'escaped' and the barman had been serving them cider for most of the evening. To make matters worse, the landlady arrived just after I did and blamed the whole thing on me!

Thankfully, she believed me and the barman was sacked on the spot. I spent a scary night, watching my daughter whilst she slept it off.

I can't believe how adults can be so neglectful. The prize should not have been passed over until a responsible adult was there to receive it.

Re: charity raffles !! tombolas

I can see where the stall holder probably felt like that but I've been at plenty of raffle where the prize if it's alcohol hasn't been handed over until an adult could take it. I think if it was me I'd rather have a parent ranting on at me for not handing the prize over than end up with an inebriated child.
