Happy Groundhog Day ...

Well folks, it's that time of year again. Tomorrow is Groundhog Day We'll be keeping an eye on Punxsutawney Phil, and here in Canada on Wiarton Willy (Ontario), and Shubenacadie Sam (Nova Scotia). Will they see their shadows? Will we have six more weeks of winter or not? There will be no shadows in Kingston tomorrow; we have a severe winter storm alert. Blizzard conditions for us, and cold ... cold as a whore's kiss, and 30 to 40 cms of the white and fluffy stuff. The City crews are already out plowing and sanding in order to keep ahead of the storm.

Re: Happy Groundhog Day ...

I'm my own prognosticator.

If l see a reflection in the pond tomorrow, I go back into my burrow for another six weeks.

Hope you survive the weather. I know it causes havoc, but it sounds more exciting than dark and dreary Lancashire drizzle.

May your prognostications go well ... and that spring springs early ... But the weather here is turning real nasty .... it's a stay home with bongs and beer night ... -17, with a 30kph north east wind, and snow, and blowing snow, and lake effect snow ... well, you can imagine. Oh for the Lancashire drizzle and fish and six in newspaper.!

Well, according to the rodents .... we might have an early spring ... and if we don't, groundhog stew.

Eric, what is 'lake effect snow'? Do the Great Lakes create their own snow in addition to your normal downfall?

Oh ... sometimes in winter, warm moisture - laden air masses flow from the south west. As they pass over the lake, much of which is frozen, the moisture tends to fall as snow because of the cooling effect. So, on bad days, like last Tuesday, we had a Clipper blizzard from the north west, with lake effect pushing up from the south west. And a sore back from all the shovelling
