I.D cards for children on buses

i think this has got totally out of hand, was boarding a bus with Reece yesterday and the driver stopped me and asked me how old he was, as Reece is 11 and the smallest 11 year old around i was gobsmacked, the driver then said to me you will have to pay full fare for him, i asked why and he said because you havent got a young persons saver card for him, i hadnt a clue what he was on about, so he gave me a leaflet....

If you're aged between 11 and 16 you may still travel at the reduced rate, but you will need to obtain a Young Person's Saver Card.

Children aged 10 and under may wish to consider obtaining a Young Person's Saver Card to prove entitlement to the reduced rate.

Young People Aged 11 to 16
Young people aged between 11 and 16 may travel at the reduced rate upon production of a valid Young Person's Saver Card.

Young people aged 11 and above who do not have a Young Person's Saver Card (or similar proof of age) will be required to pay the FULL ADULT FARE.

Young people who do not live in Lancashire may use any other bus company or local authority proof of age card to obtain reduced rate travel on our services.

Aged 11 to 14
Saver Cards issued to young people aged 11 to 14 are valid for 12 months.

Aged 15
Saver Cards issued to young people aged 15 are valid for 12 months, or until 31st July following their 16th birthday - whichever is sooner.

Aged 16
Saver Cards issued to young people aged 16, and in Year 11 at school, are valid until 31st July following their 16th birthday.

This ensures that all Secondary School students (up to Year 11) may travel at the reduced rate.

apparently these saver cards are available at the library in Accrington or the bus place on Ainsworth street in Blackburn, if you are aged between 11 and 13 you dont need to pay for them, but older than that they are £2 a year, you will need to take with you 2 passport sized photo's and a passport or birth certificate

is this transdev's way of making a few extra pounds??

Actually I don't think it's such a bad idea for children to get these I.D. cards because they are having to prove their age for more and more things and if they have one they will have less trouble........and they'll also be sure to get half fare on the bus with no problem.

These cards are a good idea in principle but the kids shouldn't have to pay for them, that's just a way as Flashytart says of making extra money for no real reason.
I twice had the same experience as Flashy had when getting on a Blackburn bus with my thirteen year old, ok he's tall but no way does he look anywhere near 16. Difference was the first time it happened the driver happily took my word on his age & I paid half-fare, the second time I had to pay full for him so it's obviously something the driver can use his discretion on.
These cards are good if the kids are travelling alone but if they are with an adult who confirms their age or are in school uniform they shouldn't need them.

just been down to get one for Reece and they havent even put his d.o.b on it, all that it says is...NAME-Reece Sillitoe...School-Intack and his picture

Just goes to show it's a money making scam. They are making out, it's so they know the kids ages, yet there is no age on the cards

oh and here's a tip for you all, they dont actually have to be passport photo's, as long as the pics show a clear headshot of the child and arent too small they will do, a few people i've spoke to today went out and paid for actual passport pics and didnt know anything about the other pics you can have (i asked the bloke in the spot on shop) i took a mini school pic of Reece down and my dad photocopied it for me so i had two

If it's an I.D. card it should have all of the persons details..........I think you are right about it being a money-making scheme.........where will it end........will you have to get I.D. for babies before you can get them out of hospital...Especially if you taking them home on the bus.

I got away paying half until i was nearly 21 and then i just bought a bus pass. Then 9 months of that and i got a free bus pass as i was working for the bus company. They brought the id cards in because of people like me - paying half when they shouldnt have been. They dont need the birthdate on because they will have had proof of their birthdate when it was issued - and as kids can lose stuff pretty regular its a good idea not to have their birthdate or their address on.

How is it? She did not have to pay, he is between 11 and 13. If you ran the bus company would you want over age kids travelling at reduced rate? It sounds like a sensible idea to me.

Do pensioners still get a bus pass?

They don't need to. Just need to know he is entitled to the cheap rate. Having the card proves that.
