Impetuosity & Foolishness of Youth.
Where to begin ? looking over some of the threads it appears on occasion a statement or comment is made which I think people may with hindsight regret I am also guilty as stated (So it isn't purely confined to younger members) despite the title.
I suppose what I mean is, we've all at some point done something we've later rued or regretted & looking on those incidents now, we think " How stupid was that!". Whether it be for 30 odd years ago or more recently, it seems that inside us still is that daftness & naivety.
Here an anecdote to show you what I mean. As kids we were always told to stay away from the canal unless someone sensible was with us (usually someones older Brother or Sister) & not to go swimming. So of course we went as something forbidden is all the sweeter & who'd know right... !! We'd be in & out the canal like water rats thoroughly enjoying ourselves.
At the time the "New" Motorway M 58 was being built & that meant a bridge over the canal, now here was a challenge, who was hard enough to jump off the bridge into the canal. After much goading & name calling we all took our turns bar Kev's little brother who then became the object of derision for wussin' out. He was adamant he wasn't going to jump so he was disowned & told to go home & not hang round with the "Men" (11 - 15 year olds).
So he did & with him sitting on the doorstep snivelling & snotty nosed the Mums started giving him a dose of the Inquisition, now an 11 year old has the breaking strain of soggy Lettuce & he "grassed" us up the traitor. We came ambling back in the evening for tea thinking we'd be clear (stinking of canal & with damp trollys, they'd never notice). We got the third degree but denied everything, but then they pulled up the "Star Witness"
So hungry & with sore arses we were all away up the dancers in our respective abodes & gated for the Week. As they say all part of being British & growing up. In truth we were really lucky, during the construction on the bridge various items had fallen into the canal including several steel reinforcing rods, a couple of weeks later another young Lad from my class had jumped into the canal & caused himself injury, not severe, but bad enough that he needed stitches in his chest. Yes we'd been very lucky & looking back..........well, you get to thinking.
So there you go ! & there you don't ! just a little meander into a Happy past So how about you Folks ?

Re: Impetuosity & Foolishness of Youth.
I know some of do, and I feel genuinely sorry if that's the case, but so far in life Ive been lucky not to regret a single thing I've done, or said....or didn't say.
It's my one death bed wish. To have lived life to the best of my ability, and regret not one single moment that I'd spent living it.
(Departs to play some Edith Piaf....)

...and I do know I've been lucky to have arrived at this stage of life with no regrets.
Not everyone has the luxury of choices, that I was lucky enough to be given, and follow the path I chose in life.

Re: Impetuosity & Foolishness of Youth.
up until this thread i always said i don't do regrets, i do and i don't...it has made me think
i do regret my mum dying when i was 15 and wish i hadn't been such a little git for her whilst she was alive, everyone looks at things with hindsight and wish they could change the past somewhat, this is my deepest and only regret
do i ever regret being with Reece's dad even though he tret me like crap?...hell no !! i wouldn't have Reece if i hadn't have been with him
as the song goes....'regrets i've had a few, but then again, too few to mention'
i've lived...and thats the best part of it, i've experienced things some people NEVER experience...life is what you make it....and i've made it what i wanted

That's the sort of sad regret I count myself blessed not to have had. There's no choice there, and you sadly can't change somethings.
If your mum was anything like the good mum you are to your son, she'll have known you loved her, and was just going through the stroppy phase we all have to grow through, and would have understood completely, that she was loved by you with all your heart.
I remember overhearing a similar tale when I was a kid, and it made me determined to show those around me that they're loved, even at the risk of being a soppy sap
My dad died when he was only fifty one, but I was grown up, and got back in time from London, so we could all be with him, and tell him how good a person he'd been, and how much we loved him, as he breathed his last breath.
I was lucky.

It isn't all about regret, it's also about thinking "well at the time it was a good idea" just not right clever now you look at it
I don't intend with this thread to have people bringing up painful memories for themselves & getting upset, that isn't my intent. What I would like is for people to take a light hearted look at some of the Daft things they've done in the past & maybe not so distant past & if they make you smile so more the better, as it'll probably make someone else smile too & give them a lift. So go on make someone smile !

Thank you, but it is merely along the same lines as your thread "Who's shaped you ?" which was also a subject that had us all stopping & thinking about the real "Us".
I think occasionally we need to look inwards, it makes us more resilient & appreciative of what we have.

I am sorry if this has caused you any upset Shaz & Rindy (it was not intended), but I can understand your feelings. I myself was just 20 when my Mum died, I was in Ireland at the time (1985), but I was flown home to be with the family.
She died in early February but I was lucky enough to see her in early January, so my memories of her live & vibrant were fresh in my mind when the news came.
Time has healed the resentment & bitterness, but regrets in this instance can't be altered, I regret her not seeing me married off despite her telling me no one would be daft enough to have me
I regret her not seeing her Daughter in law (the one daft enough to have me) a Grandson & Great grand Daughter, all things that have transpired since her departing. But as you say we've lived & life on occasion does bring some regret.

Re: Impetuosity & Foolishness of Youth.
It hasn't upset me.
Not much does.
I'm of the opinion it's better to talk, than bottle things up, and let them fester.
Okay, gladly no regrets, but I do look back at some of the daft things I've done, and laugh.
Like thinking I looked 'cooler' never smiling. When in reality I just looked like a miserable git.
Some of the things I used to wear make me chuckle now. Think of the weirdest punk, or New Romantic, and times it by ten. If you're going to be outrageous, be the most outrageous, and I was. Strangely I never pulled much in those days.
