The French protested it wasn't fair play( they always do when they lose) but if there was a referee he'd run for it by then so the protest was over-ruled by the English and after a while the French stopped protesting(there's only one way to shut a Frenchman up).

That's one way of looking at the match. I think the French came to the game having it in their power to win, or to lose. As is common with the frogs, they opted to lose. They were strong on the wings; they had depth; they had a powerful midfield. Admittedly, the Genoese forwards they bought didn't have the power or the speed of the English; but they would have opportunities once the English attack had exhausted itself. So the French chose to go for an all out attack ... a suicide choice. It worked in 1191 ... but its surprise effect was no longer a factor
