Marriage Proposals

Just been reading about marriages and some very romantic proposals leading up to them and it got me to thinking, which I have been known to do on occasions. I thought it would be fun, or maybe otherwise, to hear how inventive you Accrington Webbers were when proposing (proposing marriage that is!), and if you had gone to any great lengths to impress with some romantic or unusual setting.
MY Accrington bloke was the epitome of romance – NOT!!!! We had known each other a bit less than 3 months and were sitting in a pub (naturally!) knocking back a few, as you do. Can’t even remember which pub now – but think it might have been in Blackburn, definitely not a very impressive one.
He said, out of the blue, ‘let’s get married and go to Australia’. I thought about it for a minute or two, decided I didn’t have anything better going on at the time – or maybe I had imbibed too many gin and dry gingers – so I said ‘OK’. So we did and we did. Btw, that was 56 years, 5 kids and 5 grandchildren ago.

Seem to recall saying to the late missus,one evening in the boozer after slurping a great deal. I'll marry yeh, but i won't live oer brush. That musta been dead romantic, cos she said al-right.

Think that was in the Black Horse?

My romance was serialised in my blog, and it had my regulars on the edge of their seats.

Have just spent an hour or so reading a great story written by a down-to-earth woman who dares to be honest about her true feelings - not worried about what people will think (should be more people like her), no cover-ups, and who lets us into her life.
I suffered with her, I laughed with her, and I (almost) cried with her (except I'm not really the crying type). Have still to catch up with some of the later blogs but thank you Margaret for putting me in touch with your story. Enjoyed it immensely. Would make a great book.

I wonder how many young couples today in this 'instant society' of ours would be as patient as you were, Margaret, waiting both for the 'married bliss' bit and for getting things together for a home of your own. Or how many expect only the 'ups' and give up when the 'downs' are there.

Dotti glad you enjoyed the blog. Next week we will have clocked up 47 years od marriage.
It hasn't been easy, but then nothing worth having is ever easy.

Glad it moved you Jen.......If I read it I am transported back to those days in a flash, it feels like yesterday. That is one of my main reasons for writing a blog..to remind me where I came from....and also that things change. So however bad they might feel, it won't always be like that.....but you need to re-visit those times sometimes, to make you value what you have right now.

Thats a great way of looking at life IMHO.

Not normally a blog reader (have to be honest, the first A/W one I read was Mick’s the other day) I have to say how much I am enjoying reading about the life and times of the family Pilkington. Have almost caught up after only clicking on to this blog a few days ago. Now I think I may have become addicted, it’s a great read, especially knowing it is all fact. Love the way you write, Margaret, and your humour. Think you may have missed your calling, but remember it’s never too late.

No, it isn't too late until you are dead, but I have lots keeping me busy right now......so my blog has had to take a bit of a back seat......glad you are enjpying it though....and Cashy you are spot on. Sometimes we forget where we have come from, our humble beginning...when we had nowt.......I still have most of it left! (the old ones are the best)
