Race to buy "Popemobile" hots up
A second hand car once registered in the name of Joseph Kardinal Ratzinger - the new Pope - is up for sale on eBay.
The metallic grey 1999 Volkswagen Golf went up for auction on the German site of eBay at a minimum price of 9,900 euros (nearly 7000 pounds).
And after some 300 bids, the price hit one million euros.
'Popemobile' owner Benjamin Halbe, 21, from Olpe in Germany's Sauerland region, said he bought the car from a local dealer in January.
The auction closes on May 5th at 19:30 local time (17:30 BST).
Although the Pope is not known for his driving prowess, the seller implied he had been driven around in the car by a chauffeur.
The car has 47,000 miles on the clock.
One supposed buyer quipped on eBay: "Does black smoke or white smoke come out of the exhaust pipe?" a reference to the Vatican signal to show a new pontiff has been selected
