Sorry for the delayed response cousin Ianto, but yes, the squirrels must be "culled!" First in the surrounding acreage there are probably ~40 -50 (-the 10 in my freezer
). If not decreased, squirrels develop a type of flea that decimates the population by investing the nest and killing the babies!
Also, most of these critters are fat from my plums, grapes, apples, nectarines, peaches, cherries, apricots, blackberries, blueberries, corn, squash, etc. They harvested much more than we did.
They also, drive the small flying squirrel population that I've seen in a few of my nest boxes.
And yes, I do make a fine squirrel stew, the Mountain Man/Frontiersman I tried to be! And, as noted before in Nightlife, if I can get a ride from the Airport, I could bring some stew to the Christmas Meet
I also give some squirrels to some of my poorer neighbors!
A bit of another side note. I try to act all big brave hunter out there. However, I came across 2 squirrels frolicing together I thought they were too cute and didn't wish to kill one and leave it's mate alone. AM I A Wuss OR WHAT!
Brian
