Re: QI fact of the day
The expression "Robbing Peter to pay Paul" comes from a time when land belonging to Westminster Abbey (dedicated to St.Peter) was sold to raise money for repairs to St.Pauls Cathedral.

Not sure you are correct Dave... I thought it was robbing the Peter (Gas Meter) to pay Paul (the bloke who owned the off licence round the corner).

OK Mancie I'll allow some deviance on the ins & outs, it's probably a regional thing I would imagine. or a modern day equivalent

Re: QI fact of the day
Another one from the bbc ..
Top hats have been fashionable for almost 200 years, but when the first one was worn in 1797 by James Heatherington, he was immediately arrested and fined 50 pounds for behaving in a manner 'calculated to frighten timid people'.
When was the last time you saw someone wearing a top hat .. besides at a wedding ..

Quite often over here (Germany) the chimney sweeps do, well some of them, usually the old boys "Masters in their craft" sort of thing wear them as a tradition

Re: QI fact of the day
todays on the bbc website:
25% of the world's sheep are fat-tailed.
There are in Arabia two kinds of sheep worthy of admiration, the like of which are nowhere else to be seen. One kind has long tails no less than four and a half feet long which, if they were allowed to trail along the ground, would be bruised and develop sores. As it is, the shepherds have enough skill in carpentry to make little carts for their sheep's tail. The carts are placed under the tails, each sheep having one to himself. HERODOTUS
so who gets close enough to the sheep to decide if theyre fat tailed .. and how ..
i can see this going to the over 18s ..
