Thought I would just add a little attachment to this thread bringing us up to the modern era:-

A new toilet installed in Houston, with the heading 'Would you use this toilet ?' Seems one way glass throughout

Squires Adamant the name was glazed on the inner rim, my dictionary
definition of adamant is-not yielding to requests.
Who said the Victorians lacked a sense of humour.
