So The Day Has Arrived!

Well I'm a smoker, and I've just come in from the pub, I've left early because although they were offering a lock in I didn't want to extend the pain.

I will now be shifting my drinking habit to only fine days and my drinking to pubs that have tried their best to make life as easy as possible for me.

All of you that don't smoke are now welcome to the pubs, you can go there without any worries of us, the smokers interfering with you. However, if you look at the way pubs have been over the last few years it is we, 'the smokers', that have kept them open for the rest of you. How many of you none smokers are going to rush forward and fill these establishments when we have left? You are all too worried about your health issues to sacrifice your livers the way that we did.

We intend to start our own smoking dens, (shock horror), bring our own cans and smoke as much as we like in each others houses. This will add profit to such places as ASDA and Tesco but cut the profits of the pubs until, gosh, come Christmas when you expect to take over the pubs, (as usual), they ain't gonna be there!

P.S.Please note in which section this is in before you start pulling me to pieces 'cos I know most of you lose your humour over this topic.

Yippee for no smoking day, and thank you all.

I'm a non-smoker and I think I can safely say that I have never been interfered with by a smoker on the occasions when I have frequented a licenced premises.

I would make a joke about being able to smoke opium, but not tobacco, in pubs from now on, but I've been chastised for encouraging the use of drugs, and instead of the pub, will be serving out my community service helping out at the Nancy Reagan 'Just Say No' drug centre, serving orange squash.

The Minister for health was on telly tonight saying it must be a good day because "the whole of Europe is moving towards this"...Neville Chamberlin had the same attitude in 1938!

Will you be going to the smoke free pub every night now, to take the place of Less, and to keep the pubs in business?

Or will you be like other ex-smokers, who sit at home every night, counting how much money they've saved since quitting the weed?

Both. We rarely use pubs as they are usually fogged out with smoke. We will no doubt visit more often now. I think at least some pubs have seen an upturn in business since going smoke free. Now it's total, I hope the trend continues.

I was only joking by the way. I admire anyone who has the strength to quit smoking, if that's what they want to do. Good on you.

On a serious note, it will be interesting to see how the ban affects the licenced trade. I was told that Accrington did have a non-smoking pub, Dolly Grey's (?), that place that is now a hotel near the station, but no one went in after the blanket ban was introduced, and it was forced to close down.

Will be interesting to see. Most of my booze comes out of Tesco and Sainsbury's, so no change for me.

Most of my non-smoking friends, who didn't go out much because of the smokey atmosphere, aren't planning to go out that much more either.

Well I'm one of those non smoking (friends???? ) and it won't make me go out any more.

As I've said on other threads, I'm all for people stopping smoking but I really don't think that banning it in pubs will have the desired effect - unless of course, the desired effect is to have all pubs close down.

Re: So The Day Has Arrived!

Some pubs in this area have built custom made 'smokers rooms'. One of them is a kind of 'conservatory' (quite apt name really) with the windows lowered 18" from the top, leaving an 18" gap open to the air, which complies with reg's. They had also added patio heaters.

I thought the smoking ban applied to all buildings, not just pubs?

18 inch gap would not be allowed in the regs 50% of the perimiter of the smoking area has to be open
