Such a laid back country and lovely folk too.
listening to Alex Lester (radio 2), this morning the subject got onto hotels and it reminded me of this that happened to me a few years ago.
I was working in Southern Ireland and after a long tiring day booked into a reasonable looking Hotel for the night.
I was paying by credit card.
The person on night duty didn't know how to use the machine and said she would leave a note telling the person on mornings to deal with it.
She showed me to my room and then said, "Oh dear theres no television in this room, we'll have to knock that off the bill".
She left ignoring the fact that I was pointing to a television sat on top of the wardrobe.
It seems there is a 'posher' hotel half a mile down the road and they catered late into the night for weddings etc. and would book their staff into this hotel. About four in the morning my door was suddenly thrown open and a young lady was stood there. As I woke up and moved she saw me and ran away screaming, the night porter lady came and apologised she said she'd forgotton I was in this room she would make another note for the morning person about the disturbance, I got up the next day and was having a very generous breakfast, when the new lady came through with an envelope and gave it to me she was full of apologies and asked me to forgive them and said that I was not to be charged for my stay.
I thanked her finished breakfast and two days later opened the envelope when I was doing my expenses not only was the bill marked no charge but she had refunded the money, (in crisp Irish Punts as they were then), that hadn't been taken off me in the first place!

Ah the memories that brings back Less.
I often used to go over to Ireland and stayed at the Marina/Shalamar or whatever new name it had decided to call itself on the banks of the Shannon in Ruskey, Co. Roscommon.
On one occasion I was in a ground floor room which was just as well as you will see. I had to leave early on the Saturday morning to get to Dublin to catch a plane - nobody on the desk so I couldn't check out. Worse to come! The doors were locked so I couldn't get out!
Panic!
Went back to room - phoned 'the desk' . OK yes daft if there was nobody there but it actually went through to the manager who told me he wasn't there yet! I told him I knew he wasn't there yet but I needed to leave. He asked me if I could "manage to climb out da little winda" - which I did, with my luggage, looking like I was doing a runner! But of course I hadn't paid because I was supposed to settle up on leaving! When I told him that, he said it was his fault for being up late and not to worry my head about it!

Well Willow, I sent Alex Lester Radio 2,
Your little tale and he read it out this morning (Monday 26 March).
If you click on the above link and go to the listen again feature for Monday you can hear it, it's about an hour into the show.

About 10 minutes later he read out an email I sent him about specialised greetings cards which is one of his topics for today.

Re: Such a laid back country and lovely folk too.
I finally managed to be able to listen to this - he didn't quite get the story right but how often does a radio show actually manage to do that?
I managed to get too many 'manages' into that sentence!
