Surrogate Tiger mum

Surrogate tiger mum

A woman has agreed to breastfeed two hungry tiger cubs after their mother killed their sibling.

Hla Htay, a 40-year-old mother-of-three from Burma, offered her services to the two cubs after the male and female were taken from mother Noah Noah over fears for their safety.

The two-week-old cubs' mother had killed the other member of the litter, leading staff at Rangoon zoo to take them from her care.

Each tiger cub now receives a combination of bottled milk and breast milk in an effort to boost the world's declining Bengal tiger population, which is endangered and threatened by hunters.

"I felt sorry for them so I decided to feed them before their teeth grow," the surrogate mother told the Myanmar Times.

Officials have taken the drastic action because the cubs are the first to have been born in the zoo in 16 years.

Noah Noah and her mate were brought to Burma from Thailand in 2001.
