Most of us don't have a fire, will a micro-wave oven be environmentally friendly enough, (doesn't do a good crackling though).

I would say its a good idea if it can be done, for some of them it will be the first time they have done anything for anybody else. And as for not knowing if its their relative or not i can say from first hand experience [at least at burnley crem whilst building the rememberance garden] that each individual is just that an individual and not mixed with any others.

Oh, that is a new one on me.......I'm sure someone told me that the cremated remains were not individually done....but perhaps they were just winding me up.

I had heard the same Marg but then read a artcle somewhere that put my mind at ease explaining that every body is "done" individually.

I was told by a crematorium worker that what you get is the bones after they have been put in a grinder (because that is all that survives the fire)

When I was scratching my head...trying to remeber, I think I saw it on TV......there was some series on a couple of years ago regarding disposal of bodies.....it wasn't local.

Yes, that is right......my Dad's ashes were more like grey grit....quite coarse.......I expected it to be like dust really.

Perhaps its now different from early 70s? was told by a good mate, who was working at a crem,as a contractor, they did em at night 3/4 at a time.

Well as i said when i worked at Burnley crem about 15 years ago the cremators were single units and could only take one at a time, as for whats left its not a lot because at 1200 degrees bones burn to more or less nothing.This is a bit gruesome but the hardest bit to get rid of was the brain. When complete the remains are scanned with a magnet to remove any metal objects hip joints, watches, keys etc, then placed into a ball mill to reduce the remains to a coarse dust and then placed into a individual jar.

The article says they are using the residual heat AFTER the cremation as they cool the furnace(with a blast of air?). So the loved one is long gone, no disrespect given. They'll have to cool the furnace before they open the doors again(800C to 150C) or the next coffin would pre-ignite, set the curtains on fire and disrupt the service.
If you can accept taking home ground up bones you can accept waste heat left after the cremation being put to good use. No problem.
