What Is It About Smoke Alarms?
I have two of them, run off the mains with rechargeable batteries so in theory nothing should go wrong.
In fact if I owned a chip pan I could in theory never sleep through it bursting into flames.
Now I'm not asking for advise such as disconnect, annoying as the alarm is, I just don't want it going off whenever I have a mm of fat in the bottom of my grill pan, I finish my cooking, turn the gas off, then 5 minutes later the alarm goes off, Why? Before you suggest move the grill pan, I always leave it to cool down before placing it in it's proper place.

Re: What Is It About Smoke Alarms?
I have one in the hallway just outside the kitchen door. I have to shut the door when I am grilling lamb chops, otherwise the alarm goes off. Strangely, pork chop doesn't set it off. I wonder if it's a religion thing.

Same at my parents house. But. They can't cook bacon with the door open without it going off

Exactly the same with us, lamb worse than pork. But neither have been so bad since we swopped the gas high level grill for electric one at counter top height.

Re: What Is It About Smoke Alarms?
We have a smoke alarm in the hallway but in the kitchen there is a fire alarm.
It will not sound a warning if I burn toast or anything similar but only go of if there is heat from a fire, that is what the fire officer explained when he visited us after the house was built.
I wonder if they would be any good for you less.
I do think though that once the heat rises enough to set off the fire warning alarm the toast will be past saving and most of the kitchen will be on fire. The fire officer recommended it though. Both alarms are hard wired and battery supported.

As well as not installing one in the kitchen, (of course), the recommendation is not to position one just outside the kitchen door. Makes sense.

Re: What Is It About Smoke Alarms?
Ours was at the top of stairs, as positioned by the fire brigade, but the sodding thing was always going off, not conducive to a good nights sleep, we had em back to it, but a couple of months later, twas at it again, so to bin it went.

Re: What Is It About Smoke Alarms?
We got them fitted by the fire brigade as well .. 1 at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom of the stairs .. when the one at the bottom of the stairs which is next to the kitchen door started going off i rang them up and they came and replaced them both with different ones .. they said they where faulty as they had received a faulty batch from the manufacturers and has to change quite a few of them.

Re: What Is It About Smoke Alarms?
We can have smoke billowing out of the wood burning stove, not a peep from the alarm but try doing a bit of toast !

Re: What Is It About Smoke Alarms?
I had a nightmare a couple of months ago, twas about 2am and I'm out for the count when the flaming thing went of, well when it takes you all your time to walk 5 paces it was very disconcerting, I got up and switch it of, couldn't smell smoke had a look round nothing, jaysay was not very happy, he was even less happy when the thing went of again 10 minutes later. The emergency call service was useless hate to think what would happen if I had a real problem, eventually my son in law came over removed the thing and took it away as it was a sealed unit and would have continued going off.
The day after I rang HH, they weren't interested, said they would prefer it to the fire brigade, I told them that I was disabled and it was urgent that they refused it right away, eventually decided to make sure and rang the FB and they attended within 4 hours replaced the alarm and did a full safety check on my gaff, because of the oxygen and gave me the okay. The only thing is about a week later I received another call from the FB saying they had had a referral regarding a smoke alarm, now I know just what HH consider to be urgent

Re: What Is It About Smoke Alarms?
It seems that the fire brigade's well intentioned policy of providing free alarms has had the opposite effect of people binning their faulty ones and preferring to have none.
It is years since I was told by a councillor that the fire brigade would be installing an alarm in the stairwell of the block of flats I live in. It hasn't happened, and I haven't pursued it because of the risk that a faulty one would be installed.
When you go to the expense of BUYING one, at least you can return it if it doesn't function properly, and the production standards are likely to be better than the mass produced cheapos the fire brigade are giving away.
