When did fit start to mean attractive?

Chanced upon this after chasing a link of cmon's
( since you ask Tories agin' )

BBC News - Who, what, why: When did 'fit' start to mean attractive?

And here's me going through life thinking if a girl was fit she could do 100 press ups before getting into bed with me!

"You should be so lucky" says the current Mrs P just in from her 6 mile run.

Re: When did fit start to mean attractive?

In my world, it was fairly recently!
I remember being a teenager and hearing somebody say 'Tidy' as a synonym for 'attractive' ,and thinking how nobody could ever realistically describe me as that, given the amount of food wrappers shoved under my bed & the clothes I wore at the time.

I notice now, people also say 'Fit' when talking about clothes.

'I've got a new dress!Ain't it FIT?!?!'

I don't think I'll ever be 'cool'.

No it isn't 'fit'. It's nice, It's pretty, It's lovely etc......
Not fit.

I find that extremely difficult to believe, given your profession. We were saying it in school in the late 80's early 90's

I remember being in a maths lesson round about 78/79 and the teacher asking us what 'fit' meant. We were all using the word back then to describe someone we found well, really fit!

Re: When did fit start to mean attractive?

Certainly remember using 'fit' in the sixties to describe a 'good looking female'

Re: When did fit start to mean attractive?

Margaret R was a 'fittie' c 1960 - FACT, not myth....Some Oxford dictionaries will tell just when it appeared in our language.

I've heard females use it when describing men in a sort of 'I fancy him' way. I used to hear it all the time, with my acute hearing.

Definitely been around for 50 years at least. We used to talk about "fit birds" whilst sitting on the deck in the 60's (and we weren't talking about sparrows doing press ups on the Town Hall roof).

Unfortunately, you weren't the subject of the conversation Bob.

Mostly I heard it from the mouths of High School and Hyndburn Park girls.- Little Pom, Margaret R were amongst them.
