World travellers or geographical pygmies?
I am up in Scotland with our Director of Metallurgy from Niles Ohio in the US.
Three things. and he is Chinese/American...
Atrocious table manners..... like sitting across the table from my 4 year old grandaughter.
Knowledge of anything outside of the US is Zero..didn't know the Scots have a language called Gaelic
He had never heard of Haggis.
Well go on then 4
Thought Barrow in Furness was in Scotland cos' they talk different.
(Not taking him to Burnley)

Well Yes, but you do say he is of mixed race and such traits can be explained by the fact that by tradition they are, ignorant, uneducated (and with some very strange family habits).
Surely though, his Chinese side would have compensated for some of that?

Re: World travellers or geographical pygmies?
In the '80s, the main newspaper in Arizona, Pheonix Globe I think - usual bulky US newspaper - no more than 1/2 page on rest of the world. Very few people had passports and TV international news coverage was rubbish or non-existent

That reminds me of my pen friend in Montana (in1950s) who expected me to be friends with The Beatles because 'they are your neighbours'

Re: World travellers or geographical pygmies?
Wouldn't expect much more from a country that inflicted Dick van Dyke on us! Plonker.

Re: World travellers or geographical pygmies?
Same for us ... even Brits are guilty of knowing little about us Canucks, or our country. Even my late mom. She had a friend whose son was in a place called Ontario ... she wanted to know if I could drop in and see him if I was ever over that way. At the time, I was living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (the pronunciation gets easier after the fifth pint )
Here's a Canadian take on how much our neighbors know about us:

Having ventured to many states, have found the yanks everywhere to be very nice people, but a slate short of a roof.

Re: World travellers or geographical pygmies?
I also find their spelling seems pretty basic compared to the English way too, like spelling made easy for kids who are struggling to learn and need a bit of a helping hand. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a little picture at the side of every word, just to make sure!

Re: World travellers or geographical pygmies?
My American friends had no knowledge of the Canariy Islands or Majorca. It tickles me when they say "London, England"

That's so they don't get it confused with London, Ontario.
