Accrington May 1957.
Back in May 1957 the town centre had a nice sunken garden where folk could sit and chat in the summer sunshine. Does anyone remember it? To help your memory here is a picture that I took as well as one of The Deck as the youth of the day called it and The Coppice looking up Avenue Parade. I notice that The Coppice is covered in trees now and that would make sledging down rather hazardous, but then we don’t get much snow these days.
Incidentally although I took the pictures and therefore hold the copyright to them I am placing them in the public domain for anyone to use as they please.

I agree Mez, the town certainly looks like it was much nicer back then, than it is now.

Good Photo's Jambutty, and nicely done KSH.
Brings back memories of when Accrington could be proud of itself.

Thats no shadow Mik, it's a clearing in the trees and covered in shale.
We used to go up there as kids and everybody knew that part as The Eagle.

Lovely Piccy's, Jim. I think the Sunken Gardens went about 1959/60 when M&S and the other shops were built.
The piccys outside the town hall and the sunken gardens were taken about 2 O'clock on a saturday afternoon, were they not? But the picture looking up Avenue Parade
was not taken until two or three hours later...am I correct?
