I've noticed the hills are getting steeper as well. Glad you like the benches. Peel and Huncoat area council money that. The footpaths on the coppice are looking good as well.

It was just what was required, the only place to sit before was the monument steps. There is of course a seat facing roughly towards Huncoat but that is close to the easterly bypass.

More Italian windows today, from Florence, showing the Vasari Corridor. The pictures show the windows of this structure on the tops of the buildings as it makes its way through the streets and over the river. The Corridor was built in 1564 by Giorgio Vasari in only five months at the time of the wedding between Francesco I de' Medici and Giovanna of Austria; it served to link up the Pitti Palace, where the Grand Duke resided, with the Uffizi (or offices) where he worked.

It is a covered walk, almost a kilometre in length, an overhead passageway that starts out from the Uffizi, heads towards the Arno and then, raised up by huge arches, follows the river as far as the Ponte Vecchio, which it crosses by passing on top of the shops. The meat market on the bridge was at this time transferred elsewhere, so as not to offend the Grand Duke's sensitive nose with unpleasant smells on his walk, and replaced (from 1593) with the goldsmiths who continue to work there today.

On the other side of the Arno, the corridor passes through the interior of the church of Santa Felicita, down the tops of the houses and the gardens of the Guicciardini family until it finally reaches the Boboli gardens and the apartments in the Pitti Palace.

Vasari thus created a monumental urban "footpath" that took the absolute power of the ruler right into the historic heart of the city. In fact, a second corridor above Via della Ninna links the other side of the palace of the Uffizi with Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of Florentine government since the 13th century.

The Corridor was restored and reopened to the public in 1973 but can only be visited by appointment or in groups. Apart from the fact that the visitor can enjoy some magnificent and little-known views over the city from its round windows, the passageway contains over 1000 paintings, all dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the important collection of self-portraits by some of the most famous masters of painting from the 16th to the 20th century.

4 The Ponte Vecchio: the windows in the middle of the bridge were enlarged by Mussolini in WWII so Hitler could see the panorama of the river. It is said he admired the view so much he ordered the bridge not to be bombed
5 On the Ponte Vecchio. The tall building on the far left is a medieveal tower - the corridor went through several of these on its way but the owners of this one refused to let it pass through and the builders had to go round it
6 The corridor built out round the tower
7 Nearing the end of the corridor
8 Final destination, the Pitti Palace

nice architectural features there, I would love to look out of the window on picture 4. How does the window cleaner get his ladder up to clean the windows ? ( I know, I'm being silly )

Me too Dave... can't oblige but to fill in my quota here's another shot of the bridge from a slightly different angle and then one of the view of the river from the bridge looking in the other direction and not through a window. Sorry about the tourists!

I had a look around Todmorden park today.
First picture is the gate house roof and chimney.
Then a few general shots of the park.
As I passed the cricket ground I snapped a batsman clipping the ball for two runs.

Then the first pub I ever had a drink in, it's nice to see it being done up.
We were allowed in once we were wearing long trousers, remember in the 50's boys didn't get long trousers as young as they do today. All the boys in the first form of Todmorden Grammar school wore short trousers.

My allowance is up for today so I have a few more for tomorrow.

Today in Pictures, Dean Clough Reservoirs, right round the edge, with a bit of mooching.

1.The walk through the woods to get to the reservoir has become a disappointment, lots of "campfires" discarded stuff, and for some reason people take axes and chop down trees.
2. On the way round the bottom res. a view across to Pendle Hill.
3. Strange sight on the top res. I thought they looked like cormorants, is that possible?
4. Down passed the top res.
5. 6.7.8. a selection of fungi, some I have never seen before.
9. another view across the top res.
10. Where did this steep bit come from, it wasn't there on the way down.

Me and my macro shots, nowt to do with the picture in question but another macro shot, I was on my hands and knees, taking a shot of a fungi at ground level in the woods mentioned previously. I was so absorbed in the moment and Bob was sat beside me waiting, I failed to notice a couple with a dog had walked up behind me and come to a standstill when they spotted me. Well I just had to explain, but the truth sounded a bit "iffy" I was taking a picture of a fungi ! Oh Yes!

I am still playing 'catch up' with this thread.
I have a few pics to post. Not taken today, but taken over the last few days.
You all know how I like sunsets......I have had a feast of them.....to many to put on here.
1) The sun slipping down into the horizon.
2) Last golden rays filtered by the framework of the pier.
3) I never really knew what this structure was - turns out it was part of the pier...gilded with sunset
4) Lytham Windmaill and the expanse of green - unencumbered by structures this time.
5) Last light filtered through the clouds.
6) Bee on a flower - Seen in Ashton Park.
7) Silhouette of a young lady walking on the prom.
8) Statue on the War Memorial in Ashton Park. I really like this memorial. Will post more pics another day.
