Some great shots from everyone again -I've never been to Whitehaven - looks like a nice place -very interesting with the mix of seaside and industrial buildings. Everything looks really good in the sunshine!

Yesteday I had the honour of attending a lecture by a Nobel prize winner at UCLAN in Preston.
The person in question is Professor Sir Harry Kroto FRS, Nobel Laureate in chemistry in 1995. He is in Preston to receive an honorary fellowship at the university's graduation ceremony.
Known as one of the team who discovered buckminsterfullerene or buckyballs, a novel form of carbon, he is now at Florida state university. His lecture focused on aspects of creativity and one of his great interests is graphic design. It was a stimulating evening.
I graduated with my first degree from UCLAN and was a graduate student at the university of Sussex when Sir Harry was just starting out as a lecturer there in the late 1960s and have followed his career with interest. He was born and brought up in Lancashire with European immigrant parents and went to Bolton school along with Sir Ian McKellen.
Anyway I tried to get some photos but they are not good. First of all the lectern was in the way and then when he came out from behind it and the lights went on my camera battery died. Grrr...!!

Today in Pictures, a short walk around Bullough Park.
1.Start point, looking over to Rose Place.
2. All this used to be open land, you can just see Hameldon Hill.
3. Changing position, looking over the town.
4. A not to often walked path.
5. A Small Skipper Butterfly posing on the grass stalk.
6. A look around at the bottom of the path before reversing my direction.
7. Walking back up the tarmac path, its hard to believe that this was the location of the air raid shelter I used to play in as a child.
8. Almost at the top of the path.
9. Here we are back at Rose Place after a full circle.
10. Heading for the plateau before going back to the car park
Agreed! Sounds like you might have been transported back to your student years Sue!
I have just had an invitation to a "Gaudy" at my old college ( formal re-union dinner) -am in two minds whether or no to go -they only happen every 25 years so I might not be here for the next one! What is scary is thinking how long it was since I was a student yet it seems like yesterday...

What a lovely terrace Rose Place is, and in an idyllic setting -are you sure it's Accrington Dave I have never been round there -looks like a nice, peaceful area.

No 7 is what we used to call the black path going from the end of Perth Street up to the park. I can't believe it has overgrown so much. Is the low wall still at the back of Rose Place with the milkman and his bottle carved in the stones on the top?

I almost didnt recognise the place, the trees have covered the area since I used to visit. Rose place looks out over the town, and looks peacfull, bit of not so long ago history, a murderer used to live on that row when I was a supervisor for the section. That though is another story, for another day.

I must be a local name, as that is not what I called black path, that went from the factory bottoms up past black rock, and onto Millerfold Avenue and if you went on further, it came out at Lynches Garage.
I don't recall having a name for the path with the air raid shelter on.
The whole area of Bullough Park now has dense tree cover, with Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam filling in and spaces not covered by trees.
I haven't seen a low wall to the rear, as that is overgrown as well, but will take a closer look next time.
1) It's nice and cool here
2)If you look closely you can see a young heron on the wall in the middle
3) A young heron fishing
4) close up of the young heron on the wall
5) A grebe
6) - 10) Hosepipe ban on the way?

Agreed Dianne - feels like yesterday and it's 45 years at least since i was doing my first degree at what was still Harris College in Preston. What I like about visiting a university as I did on Thurs is the mix of people -young ones having a good time and perhaps doing a little work sometimes, older ones like lecturers, and an atmosphere of intellectualism if that doesn't sound too snobby or patronising.
I spoke to Sir Harry briefly on Thurs and he remembered my PhD supervisor. That was good. As for your gaudy - sounds great but might be a bit intimidating - a bit different from my one to one chat on Thurs! Anyway Dianne, having been there and had the same experiences as me you know how I felt. Very stijmulated afterwards - enough to have my first glass of wine this year, have steered clear of it recently because of being on meds, but I thought what the hell, went down like strawberry pop - well a light fizzy rose on a hot summer day would, wouldn't it?
