Not fond of HDR pics...they look 'manufactured'...unnatural.....though I do have an app(I never thought I would use that word) on my iPad that transforms pics to HDR......and you can make them as subtle or unsubtle as you want.

Aaarrggghhhhh No pic. There was a snowy owl, a beauty, sitting on top of my garage ... went to get a camera, and when I came back it had gone. Bummer; what a gorgeous creature.

I think what happens is when people get bitten by the HDR bug they tend to go over the top and do everything that way, and some are not the right subject for that technique. Although I have seen some HDR's that I like, they are in the minority.
Having said that, everyone has their own slant on photography and its not for me to sit in judgement as to what technique anyone should use.
