Re: Today in pictures

A few snaps taken yesterday in Hamilton, a city to the west of Toronto. Also known as 'Steel City' (due to the steelworks) or 'The Hammer' for obvious reasons. Hubby and I had a great lunch in one of our favourite haunts, the Black Forest Inn: Rahm Schnitzel for me, and Schnitzel a la Holstein for him, all washed down with a nice pilsner, of course. Needless to say, they had to roll us out the door afterwards!
On the way back, we nearly hit this mounted police horse!!! He came into our lane from behind a bus with no warning. Great screeching of brakes and pounding hearts later, I have expected him (the cop, not the horse) to say something through my open car window, but he evidently had other business to attend to.

Re: Today in pictures

Lovely to see Bell Lane. John Broadley born 1816 who started the printing firm is buried in the graveyard. An earlier John Broadley had a shop on Bell Lane. He was the one who murdered his first wife, Ellen Strange but he lived to his late eighties so no guilty conscience it seems.

I will have a look for his grave the next time I am mooching the area, I know nothing of the history of Bell Lane, Altham, and it comes as some surprise when you say there was a shop located on it. It is at the moment a short lane with a dilapidated house at the bottom, and some remnant of a building at the top. It must have been busier in the past as there was a Church located at the top of the lane, and they located churches where the people were.

Did you take any photos of the Falkirk Wheel and either ICI or BP refinery?
I have an odd sneaky photo I took inside the place but I would have been banned for life if I had been caught.

Re: Today in pictures

Thank you very much Gen, it's a place I have not had the good fortune to visit. Give your self a big hug and a pat on the back from me.
When I was tramping around those parts last they hadn't started building it and there was no way of crossing Scotland by water unless you went to the Caledonian Canal.
Me and my late wife used to hire a big motor cruiser and we used the Calley Cut a few times from Fort William to Inverness.
Have you ever visited the Anderton Boat lift near Northwich, I had loads of photos of that and used to load the tanker directly across from it before they reconstructed it and have been to see it in action. Sadly, the file with those photos on, including the Severn Valley Railway and the funicular lift at Bridgnorth has been deleted.
If anybody has photos of the Anderton lift I would really appreciate a look at them
All I have is one taken from ICI Winnington across the canal from it. It was still in a state of dereliction then.

One to add to Dave's Batman and Robin - I wonder who will turn up next in disguise?!

Re: Today in pictures

Just had a bit of a catch up and gave out a sprinkling of Karma - could have done with a lot more to share out so please don't be offended if you don't find any from me...
Loads of photos I really loved.
Dave's mossy wall, GPick's view from the Dunk and his water flowers - unlucky with the Kingfisher, Jen's Scottish selection, DiG's country market with clogs, Steve's photos from Glasgow, Less's panorama over Accy and "The Hammer" is a lovely town - particularly like the shot of the buskers Turtle. Forgive me if I've forgotten any but there is such a great assortment to look through.

Re: Today in pictures

Looks like you enjoy your trip to Southport Margaret.
It's another 12 months before I qualify for a free holiday courtesy of British Legion at Byng House Southport.
Your photos are tempting me to have a drive over one weekday.
